The Diverse Communities Education Specialist will apply educator-specialist skills to identify and engage Edmonton’s diverse communities in inclusive and meaningful ways. A key deliverable will be the development and delivery of high-quality, targeted educational programs, tools, and resources that target a diversity of ages, socio-economic status, cultures, languages and educational needs.

The WEO team is committed to continuous improvement, the effective use of data for program evaluation, and the provision of results that align with Waste Management Service’s goals. Integral to this role will be the ability to build and sustain positive and productive relationships with all internal and external colleagues and stakeholders, and a fervent respect for and competency in diversity and inclusion activities.

In alignment with the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments of being safe, helpful, accountable, integrated and excellent, you will:

  • Design targeted educational programs and tools for diverse audiences
  • Identify, consult with, and build strong relationships with external partners, including educational institutions, external agencies/organizations, and community partners
  • Act as a technical resource, advisor and mentor for the WEO team and internal partners, including Communications and Engagement, on related best practices
  • Review, adapt develop, recommend and evaluate educational resources
  • Support the consistent and ongoing application of a Gender-Based-Analysis Plus (GBA+ process) to all educational and strategic initiatives
  • Deliver educational programs as required/requested, applying knowledge of best practices in K-12 and adult education to ensure programs are engaging, accessible, and tailored to the unique needs of diverse audiences
  • Work with local organizations and agencies to co-create tools and resources that align with educational best practices
  • Achieve timely results in the context of a respectful, inclusive, service-minded style

Qualifications

  • University degree in Education or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 2 year’s experience in educational program development for diverse audiences, including experience teaching or presenting in a community context
  • Knowledge of educational and learning principles, techniques and practices of K-12 and adult education, including:
  • Strong curriculum and program development skills, including Understanding by Design
  • Knowledge of the unique needs of culturally and linguistically diverse audiences, different learning styles, best practice approaches to supporting English language learners, and environmental education
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply GBA+ or similar inclusion process is an asset
  • Experience collaborating with community partners to develop educational material and delivering environmental education are assets
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of research and analysis
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides, Forms, Drive) and the ability to learn and adapt to evolving technology
  • Knowledge of computer software and/or hardware used for educational/training purposes, including experience with tools such as video capture, presentation software, and e-learning content development and learning management systems
  • Team-focused and able to establish and maintain effective,respectful, inclusive working relationships with a focus on balancing competing requirements and ensuring service delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engaging, adaptive, audience-diverse facilitation skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; ability to set priorities and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrate service excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusiveness

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday to Friday

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary: $36.808 – $46.267 (hourly)
