Reporting to the Supervisor, Residence Education, the Residence Education Coordinator (REC) is a live-in position that works to create a positive living and learning environment for residents at UTM. In accordance with departmental policies and the academic mission of the University of Toronto, the REC will supervise a staff team consisting of live-in student leaders, to foster and promote a residence community that supports the academic success and personal growth of all residence students. This will be achieved through multi-modal program development and implementation, leadership development of residence students and staff, and the integration of university support services within the residence community.

In consultation with the Supervisor, Residence Education, the REC will be responsible for the supervision, leadership development and management of student-staff. They will collaborate with the Supervisor, Residence Education creating the overall vision and strategy for staff recruitment, training and evaluation initiatives, and implement associated programs and tasks. Working collaboratively with the residence life management team, the REC will develop, implement and assess a comprehensive residentially-based co-curricular program that specifically addresses the myriad issues faced by students as they live and learn in the residence community.

Hours of Work: Regular office hours Monday to Friday. Regular evening and weekend work to coordinate operations and support students living in a 24/7 residence environment. Participate in on-call for emergencies.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Determining logistical details and activities for residence events and/or programming
  • Screening and making referrals to appropriate resources and services
  • Liaising with various stakeholders to foster collaboration with LLCs
  • Directing the activities, lead a team of LLC student-staff
  • Assigning and checking the work of work-study students
  • Keeping well-informed on crisis intervention and emergency protocols
  • Training and coaching residence student staff

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three years related experience (combination of para-professional and professional experience is acceptable) working in a university residence setting is required.
  • At least two years experience must include living and working in residence.
  • Experience with evaluation and research tools, and demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, synthesize and report on data.
  • Demonstrated experience dealing with emergency situations and crisis response.
  • Experience building partnerships with constituents from a variety of institutional functional areas (students, student leaders, staff, faculty, and administration).
  • Experience supervising or supporting student staff teams.
  • Word processing, basic desktop publishing and experience with databases.
  • Excellent organizational, oral and written skills and public speaking skills necessary.
  • Proven leadership, supervisory, and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work with a diverse residence population.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience with Residence Education and/or Living Learning Communities.
  • Experience developing academic programs support programs.
  • Familiarity with eRezLife, StarRez or similar residence management system.
