This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

Responsibilities

The Safety Assistant provides administrative and technical support to the Occupational Health Safety & Wellness department, Central Zone. The Safety Assistant provides support to departmental programs, tools and training that support the critical elements of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System. These duties help ensure regulatory compliance with the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations, standards and best practices. The Safety Assistant is also responsible for providing support to OHSW programs through routine education and training to management and staff in areas such as Respiratory fit testing and Non Violent Crisis Intervention. The Safety Assistant works in collaboration and under the direction of Occupational Health Safety and Wellness peers to provide support to the organization’s Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees and the Workplace Safety Teams.

The Safety Assistant supports the Occupational Health Safety & Wellness team to assist in ensuring a culture of safety to all levels of the organization with respect to integrating safety into their operations.

Qualifications

Grade 12/GED

Completion of an Occupational Health & Safety Certificate or Certificate of Health Safety and Environmental processes required

One (1) years’ of related experience required

Knowledge of Business Intelligence System for data collection, recording and reporting

Basic knowledge of Occupational Hygiene as it pertains to Respiratory Protection as well as Hazard Assessment and Control

Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety regulations and compliance

Knowledge and capacity of supporting Joint Occupational health and Safety Committees

Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Permanent, Full-time position; 70 hours bi-weekly

Salary Information

$20.2516 – $22.5016/hourly
