Job description: This role within our Strategy Integration and Development team directly influences our executive Downstream Leadership Team in making strategic decisions regarding our business. It’s an exciting time to join this team, as our Downstream business is evolving, and we want you to be an integral part, helping to shape our strategic and focused growth. We want you to bring your related business knowledge and market insights to act as an idea-generator and influential advisor in order to help develop our strategies and direction by providing analyses and recommendations to guide the long-term growth of our business. You will use your expertise to:
- Synthesize your knowledge of refined products and related commodity markets into an accurate, consistent and insightful forecast, regulatory and climate change policy impacts on business, bio-fuels and renewable energy, and translate outlooks into strategic implications for Suncor
- Understand and quickly conceptualize business strategies to deliver insightful, fact-based analyses identifying distinguishing tactics that can provide a competitive advantage
- Provide senior management with a framework for choosing amongst strategic alternatives leveraging the downstream strategic (Diamond) process to evaluate a wide range of strategic issues
- Provide advice and supporting analysis on wide range of strategic business and financial issues largely by general guidance rather than established procedures
- Engage and lead studies to develop a keen understanding of our key competitor’s approach to market and tactics to benchmark and improve our business model
- Evaluate announcements, regulatory news, quarterly investor reports, financial filings and press releases of key competitors (and those outside of our industry) and put into context their impact on the Downstream strategy/business
- Play a key role in the annual strategic offsite meeting that aims to inform senior leaders on fundamental strategic differentiators amongst key competitors and find opportunities for Suncor to sharpen/augment or reframe its downstream strategy

Must-haves (minimum requirements):
- 10 years of Downstream-related business experience with growing accountabilities and responsibilities including leadership experience
- An additional five years of market intelligence gathering, strategic planning or other relevant experience
- A post-secondary degree in engineering, science, business, or economics, or another related discipline
- Extraordinary story-telling and interpersonal skills and you are able to communicate complex, detailed concepts widely to differing audiences in a concise, compelling manner both verbally and in writing
- A proven ability to handle contending priorities and meet tight deadlines in a dynamic environment while not compromising attention to detail
Preference for:
- Hands-on experience with scenario planning, strategy development and competitive analysis
- Refining or related operational experience
- Requires an individual who is business orientated & has a high level of professional skill in more than one discipline (e.g. Finance, Operations, Engineering, Commercial, Logistics)
- Knowledge of Sales and Marketing, Product Supply and renewable energy market
- Strong economic and financial research, analysis and modeling skills
- Working towards or completion of an MBA
Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:
- You will work out of our Downstream head office in Calgary, located at Suncor Energy Center
- Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business need
