Job title: Senior Construction Manager

Job description: Senior Manager, Construction

Our client is an established architecture and advocacy group that is endeavoring to integrate construction management to fulfill our increasing demand for laneway house construction. This role is for a senior manager who will be responsible for establishing and scaling a production-housing model for small, infill residential projects in Toronto.

Our client was a key player in the development of the City of Toronto’s laneway housing policy, which was formally endorsed by City Council in 2018. In 2021 our client will have completed over 40 projects for individual property owners in Toronto using third party GC’s, and in 2022 our client projects to complete a total of 50+ projects.

With an in-house staff of 10 including designers as well as support staff specializing in marketing/communications, accounting and business development, our client is well positioned to capitalize on the growing interest in laneway-based housing, as well as associated housing types like garden suites, which are soon to receive municipal approval in the City of Toronto and elsewhere in Southern Ontario.

Our client is currently developing a Construction Management division to complement its Architecture practice, and is looking for an established professional to take the lead and work with its senior management team to grow the division.

Ideally, the candidate should have –

  • A minimum of 10 year experience in the residential construction industry in the GTA, and a minimum of 5 years of experience as a Senior Project Manager with a demonstrated capacity to lead a project from start through to completion;
  • A proven ability to manage, motivate and lead a construction team;
  • An established network of sub-trades in the GTA;
  • Familiarity with municipal approval agencies in the City of Toronto;
  • Competence in developing and effectively managing budgets and schedules with a proven ability to meet delivery schedules;
  • A thorough understanding of building design and the capacity to work with the design team to develop/modify construction details;
  • A proven ability to act and client interface and effectively manage the builder/client relationship. This is especially important because of the nature of the housing type and its context within established neighborhoods;
  • Competence in navigating Tarion processes and a familiarity with green building design.
