Job title: Research Coordinator II – MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions

Job description: About 60% of adults have experienced childhood adversity. Childhood adversity is associated with severe life-long consequences. Interventions to build family skills and to strengthen family social supports can help minimize these negative effects, especially if delivered close in time to the child’s experience of adversity. However, identifying children who have experienced adversity is challenging.

This proof-of-concept study will examine the association between child exposure to adversity with select children’s tooth characteristics. If tooth characteristics are associated with the experience of childhood adversity and can be identified during routine dental exams in children, through future work dentists can be supported to contribute to early recognition of children who have experienced adversity.

POSITION

As part of the study, 150 mother-child pairs who are patients in a pediatric dental office in Toronto will be recruited to join the study. Mothers will be interviewed about their child, and asked about child sociodemographic characteristics and experiences (positive and negative). The team is looking for a part-time interviewer to interview the mothers. The successful candidate will have trauma-informed interviewing skills and crisis management experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • To provide progress updates at regular team meetings
  • To obtain and document consent from the mothers to be interviewed
  • Conducting interviews with mother participants based on a structured interview guide. We expect almost all interviews to be conducted
  • To report to the study team if you believe a child is in need of protection based on the interview discussion with the child’s mother
  • To work with the research scientist who is expert in resilience and trauma
  • To record the information collected during the interview in an excel document (privacy protections must be observed)
  • To review a list of community resources with mother at the end of each interview to make appropriate referrals if the mother is interested

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science (preferably with 5 years related research experience)
  • Experience with conducting interviews on sensitive topics
  • Trauma-informed interviewing skills
  • Crisis management experience
  • Superior organizational skills
  • Works well with others from different disciplines, professional, patient, and self-motivated
  • Good personal and program time/detail management skills
  • Able to troubleshoot independently
  • Mental health clinical experience is an asset
  • A flexible schedule is an asset

This position is roughly 3-5 hours/week, but may vary, which starts immediately and continues for at least one year.

As a condition of employment, all external hires will be required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination or documentation unless a valid accommodation under the Ontario Human Rights Code exists. Please note, if you are extended an offer of employment, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination in Ontario QR Code format. All internal candidates must be in compliance with Unity Health Toronto’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.
