Job description: Position Overview
The Werklund School of Education is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Technology Support Assistant.
This position reports to the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning in the Werklund School of Education (WSE).
The Technology Support Assistant provides technical and pedagogical support to instructors and students with a focus on incubating innovation of digital technologies in the Werklund School of Education. This position involves managing and maintaining a loan system for faculty and students of equipment and a Digital Creation Studio that can be reserved by Werklund School of Education academic staff and students. Another component involves supporting the overall use of instructional technologies in the Education Complex.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent organizational skills are required to be effective in this position. During peak periods of work, the position may encounter stress due to short- timelines and volume of clients.
This is a Recurring part-time position and is part of the AUPE collective bargaining unit. Peak periods of work will occur during the fall and winter semesters, with limited hours of work during the spring and summer semesters. Hours of work will be aligned to the needs of the department, and scheduled in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
The incumbent is responsible for the distribution, administration, and maintenance of technology equipment and supporting use of the Digital Creation Studio available to Werklund School of Education students and academic staff for teaching and learning purposes. The incumbent is also responsible for supporting academic staff and regular monitoring of instructional technologies in the Education Complex.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Equipment Administration and Digital Creation Studio Tasks and Duties:
- Support instructional technologies that can be booked by students and academic staff through the Doucette Library or Office of Teaching and Learning Digital Creation Studio and respond in a timely fashion to booking requests via email, telephone or in person, and ensure accurate records of bookings are maintained using an online booking scheduler.
- Support instructional technologies and assist clients with problems related to instructional technologies in the Werklund School of Education, loanable technology or technology for public use and ensure that questions are appropriately referred to other staff and services, when necessary
- Support use of Digital Creation Studio, immersive technology and other new learning technologies in the Office of Teaching and Learning, maintain space/equipment, prepare for faculty bookings and provide 1:1 support as needed
- Sign in/out equipment, resolve client problems related to the equipment, remaining courteous and using a positive problem-solving approach in challenging interactions.
- Regularly monitor classrooms in the Werklund School of Education, loanable equipment and Digital Creation Studio to ensure computers and multimedia equipment are maintained to be of maximum usefulness for clients and are always charged and operational, with all the required cables and adaptors
- Install system updates and additional software on the Windows and Mac loanable devices and other equipment in the Digital Creation Studio as required working with IT when necessary.
- Assist and train staff as necessary on new technologies (e.g., create tip sheets, demos)
- Troubleshoot, report and liaise with IT and vendors as needed for instructional technology related matters and initiatives (e.g., submit tickets to Com Media, IT)
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Support workshops, boot-camps, and other projects or initiatives for technology incubation and activation of physical/digital modularity, synchronous and asynchronous learning in the Werklund School of Education
- Liaise with post-secondary and school district personnel to keep abreast of emerging instructional technologies and provide input for new purchases of instructional technologies for the Digital Creation Studio, Doucette library, and other learning/classroom spaces in the Education Complex
- Ensure a positive team environment is maintained through effective communication with Office of Teaching and Learning staff and Doucette library staff about issues of common concern
- Assist in duties connected with the overall operations of the Office of Teaching and Learning as assigned
Qualifications / Requirements:
- An undergraduate degree, preferred Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent, and 2-4 years relevant experience in a library, education, computer, or educational services environment.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and working knowledge of computer hardware and mobile devices, particularly iPads.
- Willingness and ability to acquire new technological skills through formal training and informal learning.
- Ability to problem solve in a resourceful and timely manner.
- Advanced communication skills, including the ability to deliver group and individual instruction.
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and professionally with academic and support staff at all levels, as well as students.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and organize a multi-task workload.
- Proven ability to work within a team environment.
- A high degree of flexibility with the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
