Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Loblaw Real Estate, and serving as a key member of the LRE Leadership Team, the Vice President, Construction is responsible for planning, execution, and management of base building construction activities across Canada. The Vice President, Construction will be responsible for overseeing the construction of various types of projects including New Builds, Renovations, Expansions, Conversions, Rightsizes, and Special Projects while adding value during design, preconstruction and build phases. This role will provide partnership and support to all LRE teams as well as various functions across the organization, engaging directly with senior management to understand operational requirements of Food and Drug Retail and use that information to deliver a world class shopping experience. This is a dynamic area which requires multi-tasking abilities, as well as flexibility with changing priorities, strong Construction expertise and a relentless focus on costs and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
- Oversees the construction process and project managers to ensure quality workmanship and customer satisfaction.
- Oversees the due diligence, estimating and engineering process to ensure the integrity in budgets and accuracy of our engineering standards are met.
- Participate in all aspects of the development, pre-construction, and construction phases of all Construction Projects.
- Provides leadership, direction, and guidance in construction procedures, due diligence, estimating, budgeting, scheduling, and Health & safety practices.
- Provides robust planning, project, and budget tracking tools for the Construction team, coupled with strong communication channels and forums internally as well as externally with our partners.
- Establish and maintain operating procedures designed to provide guidelines and safety standards to all construction team members.
- Develop complete Tender packages including project estimates, bid schedules and proposals.
- Assist in negotiation of General Contractor agreements and vendor supply pricing.
- Collaborate and serve as liaison with Municipal and Federal government officials as required.
- Acts as a liaison between construction, Real Estate & Design teams to coordinate development initiatives with a “One Team” approach.
- Maintain and drive accountability for all Projects including scheduling and costs across the entire construction team.
- Manage trade & partner contracts, negotiations, and project changes.
- Actively maintain industry presence within Construction/Building industry.
- Experience and thorough understanding in building/managing construction contracts.
Role Requirements:
- Recognized University/College degree in Construction or Engineering
- 10+ years’ experience in construction management nationally in a large-scale operation.
- Experience with Retail/Food, Drug and Supply Chain would be an asset.
- Demonstrated record of accomplishment in Delivering Capital Projects on time and on Budget.
- Strong understanding of current workplace regulations, building codes, and legislation.
- Strong understanding of Loblaw Real Estate Construction Union relationships.
- Sound knowledge of Construction Practices, Trends, and Innovation.
- Recognized experience in negotiation and conflict resolution from a partnership perspective.
- Proven leadership skills in building/leading large work teams, while cross-training and developing the future talent pool.
- Strong detail orientation and project scope and progress review practices.
- Exceptional project management skills, ensuring that there is a robust process, tracking and approval mechanisms in place to deliver on time and on budget.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written for all professional situations.
- Leading by example in team accountability and cross collaboration.
- Team-oriented leadership with ability to establish credibility at the corporate and business unit level while working directly with Divisional Presidents, Operations and Merchandising leaders.
- Steps up to conflict, seeing it as an opportunity; reads situations quickly; focused listening; ability to negotiate agreements and settle disputes equitably.
