The Campus Recreation Assistant will work with the Campus Recreation Coordinator to run of all Athletics and Recreation intramural and extramural leagues, as well as recreational sports related instructional and club programming across all campuses. The incumbent will ensure that all Athletics and Recreation programs will adhere to the department policies and procedures and will be highly motivated to contribute to the vibrant student experience. The position will support with the implementation and/or expansion of various athletics and recreation areas through special events, extramural/sport clubs, promotional & outreach.

Duties:

  • Special Events – Assist the Campus Recreation Coordinator with planning and running special events including sport-specific skill competitions, learn-to-play, adaptive sports, tournaments, activity days and campus events (i.e. Faculty of Health Sciences academic adaptive sport session).
  • Extramural program – Providing support in the creation of new extramural program offerings including Extramural Basketball, Extramural Soccer and one-off extramural events (i.e. Extramural Women’s Bowling, Extramural Men’s & Women’s Badminton, Extramural Table Tennis) as well as hosting Ontario Collegiate Recreation (OCR) tournaments.
  • Sport club – Working with the Campus Recreation Coordinator and student leaders to create club sports based on student-group interest. This involves the implementation, facilitation and maintenance of new recreational and competitive sport clubs to diversify Campus Recreation’s sport offerings (i.e. Recreational Table Tennis Sport Club, Recreational Ultimate Frisbee Sport Club).
  • Communications & media – Supporting engagement strategies and promotions on social media platforms including team of the week, reels, stories and on-site footage. Occasionally updating social media accounts associated with recreational activities, creating engaging content, promoting events, and fostering community interaction.
  • Promotional & outreach – Supporting the organization and facilitation of promotional booths and outreach opportunities across campuses, residences and athletic facilities (i.e. Downtown campus promotional booths).
  • Downtown & Whitby programming – With guidance from the campus recreation coordinator, supporting the implementation of recreational activities (i.e. activity days) at the Downtown university campus and Whitby college campuses.

QUALIFICATIONS: * A minimum of a 2-year Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field is required.

  • A minimum of 6 months of practical experience in the operation of a recreation facility, including familiarity with sports equipment, facility setup, and safety protocols.
  • Experience successfully working alongside and within a large student-based team.
  • Enthusiasm for promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among college or university students.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse groups of individuals, including students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities effectively.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including daytime, evening and weekend shifts, to accommodate the timing of recreational activities and events.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms, creating engaging content, and monitoring community engagement.
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR with AED training certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Access to a vehicle for campus and potential team travel and/or a valid driver’s license.
