Job description: Reporting to the Associate Director – Cooperative & Career Education, the incumbent creates, develops and delivers current strategic career management programming in support of students’ and recent alumni objectives to successfully obtain and maintain employment in the client’s chosen field. The incumbent delivers consultative services through working with clients on a one-on-one, small group and classroom workshop delivery. The incumbent offers guidance
and resources in the delivery of focused employment strategies to meet the client’s short and long term employment objectives. The incumbent educates and guides clients through the job search strategy process and its components. Collaboration with faculty and other staff members is essential to the duties of this position.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Delivering the following one-on-one services and programs to Sheridan students and alumni:
- One-on-one consultations in personal marketing tools (cover letters, resumes, and portfolios)
- Job search strategies
- Employment and career management strategies
- Employment research
- Interview skills
- Negotiation
- Tailoring consultation approach to the clients needs; the incumbent requires the knowledge and understanding to apply evaluation results from psychometric tests such as Myers-Briggs, Personality Dimensions, etc.
- Working with students and alumni with challenges to employment including clients with disabilities, visible minorities, international employment needs, experienced workers who are re-careering, foreign trained professionals, and others.
- Develops, maintains and delivers employment related programming in classroom workshops to prepare students for up-coming networking or career fairs, and/or for general job search.
- Developing and implementing marketing campaigns to students and faculty on Career Services and programs related to employment search.
- Contributing to the development and delivery of Career Services communications plan by identifying value-added services to Sheridan’s Faculties including what information is important, who is the target audience, and when should the information be received.
- Researching and sourcing relevant materials and other educational resources for the Career Service’s resource lab and web site.
- Developing new materials and up-dating existing materials for use in the Career Services resource labs and web sites.
- Partnering with faculty members to develop materials in support of student field placements.
- Guiding and advising Career-Integrated Learning (CIL) Interns and evaluates the skill development of the CIL Interns against employability skills standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
About You
You have a keen understanding of holistic student development and the unique philosophies and theories that inform advising practice in higher education and the ability to apply these frameworks to complex advising encounters.
You have excellent oral and written communication skills, persuasiveness and perseverance.
You have a client service focus with an aptitude to make connections, support others, provide excellent customer service and might identify as a community builder.
This work is evolving and changing. You demonstrate creative thinking and enjoy exploring new communication tools and approaches.
You enjoy balancing many different tasks, staying organized and like to develop processes or systems to keep things running smoothly.
The successful candidate will also meet the following requirements
- A minimum 3-year diploma/degree or equivalent in business, humanities, adult education, human resources, career and work counsellor diploma
- 3 years of experience in a business environment including progressive responsibility in employment development, human resources, coaching and mentoring, employment recruitment, job placement, training, and employment consultation.
- Related experience which demonstrates an understanding of the barriers and issues experienced by job seekers.
- Knowledge of community services, labour market, occupational requirements and job search resources.
- Knowledge of career planning tools & resume critique approaches.
- Experience working with contact management systems will be considered an asset.
