Community programs use food as the tool to bring diverse communities together to improve community life and reduce poverty, isolation and food insecurity. This position will provide child minding at community centres while parents attend programs and events.

** This is a permanent, casual, relief position.

Work periods will be short and irregular, potentially including evenings and weekends.

Successful completion of a Police Records Check (Vulnerable Sector) is required pre-employment. **

Key Responsibilities:

· To care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers of program participants during adult programs at the community centres, while parents are in the same building

· To communicate effectively with parents of the children

· To work independently and to discern when to consult with parents when needed for child safety and wellness

· To consult with program lead staff at the beginning of each shift and as needed throughout the program

· To check in with parents at the beginning and end of each program time regarding any concerns

· To set up and maintain a child friendly and safe space for programming

· To ensure cleanliness of space and toys

· To monitor and ensure safe interactions between children

· To complete administrative tasks such as taking attendance and to keep accurate written records as required

· To participate in the program evaluation process

Skills & Experience:

· Previous child-minding experience preferred; preferably with young children

· Ability to care for young children in a safe, caring, supportive and understanding manner

· Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship

· Exemplary emotional intelligence, resilience, communication, conflict management and problem solving skills required

· Ability to work professionally as a team member with staff, participants and community members

· Experience or strong interest in working with diverse populations including people from various cultural backgrounds, income levels, and sensitivity to their needs

· Experience with and commitment to using an anti-racism, anti-oppressive and trauma informed approach to consultation, program design, evaluations of processes and service delivery

· Must be dependable, professional, flexible, a team player, and have a positive attitude

· Respectful, supportive and engaging approach to persons with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, addictions, mental illness and other life challenges

· Excellent project, timeline and deadline management skills including skills in logistics, planning and detailed record keeping

Compensation:

o We use a 3.5:1 ratio meaning that the highest paid team member is not paid more than 3.5 times than the lowest paid team member

Rate of Pay:

At House of Friendship all compensation ranges are categorized under a series of “grades” and we base our payment structure on internal equity. When determining rate of pay, a candidate’s past related experience will be taken into consideration along with where others with similar experience are currently on the pay grid.

Grade: 3

Min: $19.61

Mid: $20.80

Max: $23.28

Working Conditions:

· Flexibility required; willingness to work short and irregular hours

· May include evenings and weekends

· Work will generally be on site at Community Centres throughout the Waterloo Region

· May encounter participants at program sites who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and/or experiencing symptoms of mental illness
