We are currently seeking a Construction Litigation Paraprofessional to join our Toronto or Vaughan office to provide law clerk support to the Litigation Practice Group.
Working in a busy environment, you will be exceptionally organized, flexible to deal with changing priorities and be reliable to your lawyers and other team members. Proven ability to problem solve and take initiative, follow instructions, while meeting a variety of timelines will make the right candidate successful.
Primary Duties:
- Draft and prepare Court document related to pleadings, motion materials, affidavits of documents and records, cost outlines and settlement documents.
- Draft various correspondence to all levels of Court, opposing counsel and external parties
- Draft and prepare construction liens
- Perform title searches and obtain instruments registered on title.
- Perform searches, locate properties and register documents on title
- Review and summarize various productions received from clients, opposing counsel and external parties
- Review examination for discovery/questioning transcripts and summarize undertakings
- Prepare and assemble various briefs and other materials required for case
- conferences, hearings, arbitrations and trials for all levels of Court;
- Prepare undertakings charts as well as monitor and follow up on
- undertakings;
- Prepare demand and notification of lien correspondence;
- Manage all aspects of Small Claims Court matters including demand letter, commencement of action and settlement conference arrangements
- Liaise with clients, opposing counsel and external parties as required;
- Liaise with clients to obtain lien information;
- Communicate potential issues to the attention of the solicitor in charge;
- Retain experts as instructed by supervising lawyer;
- Other duties as are assigned.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience as a Construction Litigation Paraprofessional (Law Clerk) within a legal environment.
- A solid understanding of current legal terminology and excellent working knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, the practice directions applying to Superior Court of Justice proceedings in the Toronto region, the Construction Act, and the Courts of Justice Act.
- Knowledge of Teraview and strong ability in reading and interpreting title and property searches.
- Excellent knowledge of and experience with software applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Advanced technical skills with knowledge of CD/DVD burning software, copying onto USB’s as well as familiarity with transferring documents electronically through FTP transfer sites.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to adapt communication style, as necessary, when communicating with clients and other team members.
- Superior ability to multi-task with flexibility to handle increasingly more complex competing deadlines and demands.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong work ethic with the advanced ability to work independently towards contributing to the team.
