The opportunity
Our Power, Storage team is evolving to meet the needs of our growing business and we are expanding our presence in Calgary, AB to support our growth in the energy sector.

We are seeking a dynamic Construction Project Manager, Energy Origination & Development who will lead the owner’s team responsible for oversight of EPC agreements to design and construct hydroelectric power projects across North America. Responsibilities will span from supporting pre-FID EPC agreement(s) negotiations through COD and project closeout. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivery of construction projects ranging from $500 million to $1 billion spend per year.

The position will be based out of the Calgary, AB office however travel to site locations will be required on a regular basis. This position may require long periods at a facilities and may be required to drive long distances, be exposed to field operations and construction environments, as well as travel on short notice to other company locations which may involve some overnight stays away from home. Hours of work may need to be extended as business needs arise.

The candidate can expect to travel at least 40% of the time.

What you’ll do

  • Lead Owner’s project team and ensure all project functional targets are met
  • Provide leadership that fosters a culture of innovation and continuous business improvement as measured by the following key performance indicators: effective on-time project execution, achievement of desired schedule and budget adherence
  • Provide oversight of: EPC contract management and compliance, Project controls (Owner’s Project Schedule, Change Management, Cost Control, Document Control), Owner’s construction management & QA/QC activities, Site EH&S compliance and Permitting & Regulatory compliance
  • Communicate project status and information to company management
  • Oversee the preparation of engineering, Authorization for Expenditures, bid packages and construction plans
  • Implement an execution strategy for the projects that optimizes performance against business objectives and ensures operational success
  • Track progress of project against milestones on an on-going basis, taking corrective action as required
  • Identify resourcing and performance issues within project team, taking corrective action when necessary
  • Manage and facilitate communication and cooperation between multi-functional team members, resolving conflicting priorities and other team conflicts as required
  • Analyze and resolve technical, commercial and operational issues with functional team members
  • Instill a project safety culture with the support of EH&S resources, develop project safety objectives, track and report on performance, and take actions to ensure safe project delivery
  • Display a leadership style that engages, motivates and effectively drives high performance of team members, and promote a culture of accountability
  • Consistently provide coaching, mentoring and performance feedback to team members
  • Interface with Engineering Director and Owner’s Engineer to make any necessary changes in identified design and/or constructability issues
  • Provide field construction assistance and problem solving based on previous experience
  • Understand industry standards, applicable regulatory codes and requirements, and company standards
  • Interface with the Owner’s site Operations and Maintenance Manager
  • Participate in community relations activities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or other relevant degree, in addition to a Master of Business Administration
  • 15 years’ experience with Construction Management of hydroelectric generation, thermal generation and/or renewable generation
  • 15 years’ experience with EPC Contract Management of hydroelectric generation, thermal generation and/or renewable generation
  • 15 years’ experience with Project Management, including project controls, engineering, budgeting & cost tracking and management reporting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong relationships with EPC contractors, OEMs, engineering/technical/consultants, and developers
  • Understanding of regulatory framework and stakeholders that influence energy sector
  • Ability to identify, attract, retain, and develop the team members
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout North America may be required
