  • Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

Week 2: Sunday (1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.), Monday and Tuesday (7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

General Summary:

The Cook’s primary responsibility is to prepare quality and varied food at Holy Name of Mary Convent in accordance with established menus, recipes, and sanitary standards. (This might include extra food preparations for Jubilees, funerals, and Wigilia). This position ensures compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and local food service standards as well as the organization’s policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans a rotating menu in consultation with the local minister or designate.
  • Prepares the main meal at lunchtime adhering to all dietary procedures and sanitary regulations.
  • Prepares a light supper that can be heated up by the sister responsible for that meal.
  • Prepares the breakfast, if required to do so.
  • Prepares meals in accordance with planned menus, adhering to all sanitary regulations.
  • Prepares and serves meals that are palatable and appetizing in appearance.
  • Prepares meals for sisters with special dietary needs as identified by the supervisor.
  • Prepares substitute meals for sisters who prefer other foods.
  • Assists in serving meals as necessary.
  • Uses all the foods (eg donated items, fruits, vegetables from the garden, etc and uses up older foods first).
  • Prepares a weekly grocery shopping list including food items that need to be bought in bulk.
  • Assists the local minister in weekly shopping and purchasing of food items and household items.
  • Verifies invoices for the purchasing of food, supplies, and equipment and submits invoices to management.
  • Maintains a clean sanitary kitchen and follows all health regulations concerning the handling and storage of food.
  • Helps in cleaning the stove/dishes/counters/sinks, after food preparation and cleaning the cupboards and food storage areas, etc.
  • Assists in keeping the kitchen refrigerator/freezer clean and the walk-in cooler and freezer clean with foods in order.
  • Monitors the temperature gauges on coolers, etc, and reports any problems noticed to the supervisor.
  • Disposes of waste and food in accordance with established policies.
  • Assists in inventorying and storing food and supplies.
  • Ensures that safety, infection control, and universal precautions are followed when performing daily tasks.
  • Attends and participates in workshops and seminars as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in an institutional food service environment.
  • Some experience in an Assisted Living, Long-Term Care, hospital or other health care environment is preferred.
  • Certification preferred in food and nutrition management.
