Reporting to the Manager of Crisis Program the successful candidate′s primary responsibility will be crisis assessment in the hospital Emergency Department. The scope of the role includes responding to calls from the Emergency Department, providing timely crisis assessment and intervention and assistance in accessing or referring to internal or community resources. The Crisis Worker also will provide consultation, assessment and recommendations to other hospital units when there is an emergent psychiatric concern or monitor patient flow when there is a request for transfer to a psychiatric bed.

Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse, (BScN preferred) or Masters degree in Social Work.
  • Registration with relevant regulatory college.
  • Competent to perform CPR at a Basic Cardiac Life Support level (BCLS).
  • Management of Aggressive Behaviour course from a recognized program.
  • Minimum 3 years recent experience in acute-care psychiatry.
  • Crisis intervention experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of the Certification in Psychiatric / Mental Health Nursing CPMHN (C) preferred for nursing.
  • Experience in child and adolescent mental health is an asset.
  • Evidence of very sound assessment, organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to work well in stressful situations.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with patients, families, all levels of staff and the community.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a multidisciplinary team and to exercise sound judgement.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Exposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patients.
  • Demonstrated pattern of good attendance and work record.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN’s comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, and environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues, volunteers and other members of the community and public.
