Crosswalk Guards are responsible for providing a safe and secure crosswalk for elementary children at designated school crosswalks in HRM.

We are recruiting Regular Part-time Crosswalk Guards(s) who are bargaining members of CUPE Local 4814 for positions located in the following areas. Should we not be able to fill the vacancies listed below, we will accept applications from the general public for these same locations. We are also recruiting spares from all geographical locations.

Fairview/ Clayton Park/ Bedford/ Sackville * Lacewood Dr at Gateway Rd serving Duc D’anville Elementary Feeding Clayton Park Jr High

Halifax/ Spryfield * Connaught Ave at Quinpool Rd serving Sir Charles Tupper School feeding Halifax Central Jr High

  • James St at the school serving Beechville, Lakeside, Timberlea feeding Ridgecliff Middle School
  • Connoly St at Bayers Rd serving St Catherines Elementary feeding St Agnes Jr High.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Safely escort elementary school children across busy crosswalks throughout HRM

Enforce all policies and procedures in the operation of the crosswalk

Abides by all laws dealing with pedestrian traffic at the crosswalk

Reports any problems or safety concerns arising at the assigned crosswalk to the Supervisor or Program Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Currently employed with CUPE Local 4814 as a regular part-time Crosswalk Guard
  • Currently employed as a spare crosswalk guard, an asset.

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to stand or walk 2 – 3 ½ hours a day and be exposed to all weather conditions
  • Ability to maintain control under pressure
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Possess adequate vision and hearing.

Security Clearance Requirements: Candidates being considered for the position of Crosswalk Guard must successfully meet the security clearance requirements administered by Halifax Regional Police.

WORK STATUS: Regular seasonal (10-months per year)

HOURS OF WORK: The current daily scheduled hours for this position are Monday through Friday; 2 – 3.5 hours per day.

SALARY: The hourly rate for this position is $17.40 in accordance with the collective agreement between CUPE Local 4814 and Halifax Regional Municipality.

WORK LOCATION: various locations throughout HRM.
