Under the direction and mentorship of the Professor, the student will help Open AIR with a range of research on cutting-edge topics such as: artificial intelligence for African development; informal sector innovation in African makerspaces; Indigenous traditional knowledge and cultural expressions; international trade law and economic policy for Africa; SDG5 to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls; clean technology innovation and environmental sustainability; digital and data-driven agriculture for food security; and other related topics. Research assistants may also assist with the professors’ research focused on Canada and/or other regions of the world.Duties will span the scholarly spectrum and can include: conducting literature reviews; creating surveys and other tools; collecting, managing and analyzing data; co-writing peer reviewed articles and media materials; co-presenting findings; and managing the activities of a unit within a broader organizational structure. Students will also be encouraged and supported to conduct their own original research and build academic skills such as research methods, theory building, and perhaps even scholarly publishing. There may be some administrative duties required on occasion in order to help build highly transferable professional skills such as leadership and teamwork, project management, and community engagement.Minimum Qualifications:

  • Superior writing and research skills; • Able to read and comprehend legal language; • Ability to work individually and self-motivated; • Able to prioritize and manage time effectively; • Polished and professional; • Team player attitude.

Asset qualifications: • Prior knowledge and experience regarding Africa and/or intellectual property; • Graphic design, media, and/or professional communications skills; • Fundraising, grant application, and research administration experience.Please note that you must qualify for the Work-Study Program to be eligible for this position.
