In this critical role, you will provide overall management of the emergency response team and ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines for training and testing of equipment.
You will use your expertise to:
- Manage the staffing and development of our refinery’s emergency response team
- Coordinate with the site incident management team to provide coaching during events and training/execution of hypothetical emergency drills and exercises
- Implement site-wide emergency response procedures such as spill, fire and vapor responses, evacuations, etc. that meet regulation requirements
- Provide guidance on the effectiveness of the facility and emergency response plan
- Provide direction to field personnel during an event
- Coordinate, deliver and ensure training requirements and certifications are current for fire, hazmat, rescue, medical, oil spill response, etc.
- Liaise with outside organizations to facilitate emergency responses
- Identify gaps and opportunities for fire protection and detection systems as well as AB Fire Code requirements
- Advise site management on fire prevention equipment and techniques, and on fire code interpretation and compliance
- Implement post-incident lessons learned processes and response
- Manage the inventory and maintenance of the facilities emergency response equipment to meet regulatory requirements
- Plan and manage the annual ER budget for the EH&S department
- Manage the staffing and development of the fire hall support staff
We’d like to review your application if you have…
Must-haves (minimum requirements):
- Five or more years of experience in fire protection services or ten or more years industrial related emergency response experience
- A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- Current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) certifications in Firefighting, Hazmat, and Rescue Response, and / or Incident Command System (ICS) Training with On-scene Incident Commander Experience
- Well-developed leadership and supervisory skills
- Strong instructional skills with the ability to develop training materials
- Working knowledge of hazardous material and spill response practices
- Demonstrated communication, interpersonal and non-authoritative leadership skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels of the business
- Alignment with our

Preference for:
- Experience in industrial environments
- Experience working with regulatory agencies (EPA, API, OSHA, PSM) and NFPA requirements
- ICS (incident command system) experience
- A Degree in Fire Science and/or Emergency Management
Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:
- You will work out of our Edmonton refinery in Sherwood Park, located at 801 Petroleum Way
- Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
- You will be required to perform some heavy lifting, use ladders and work on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers with the ability to perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor as well as within confined spaces
