ABOUT THE ROLE
We have an exciting opportunity for an Engineering student to join our Projects & Construction team for 8-12 months. As the engineering student intern, you are responsible for assisting professional engineers with the design of new power plants and renewable energy projects through development, detailed engineering, construction, and commissioning. This role will require the application of basic engineering principles, and strong research skills and will focus on developing problem-solving skills. This role may be required to do research in the areas of technical solutions, regulatory compliance, construction, safety, and project economics.
This role is initially based at our Head Office in Downtown Calgary and will transition to a site based role in the spring, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
New Project Development:
Support the development of capital and schedule which are accurate, achievable, and have appropriate justification and due diligence
Assist with the preparation of preliminary Design Basis Memorandum or Functional Specifications
Provide technical support to the Project Manager ensuring the original economic and equipment performance and flexibility is maintained through the detailed design work
Acquire current knowledge of technological, environmental, and social changes effecting power plants and renewable energy (wind, solar and energy storage), assisting the manager in the development and execution of innovative top tier growth projects where you will evaluate and recommend energy technology options; evaluate and review the current state of energy technologies; evaluate and review the material changes to the current fleet that can be enabled by new technologies; provide detailed cost estimates, and SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities & threats) analyses and supporting economic evaluations
Evaluate technical portions of proposals, execution plans, and funding applications.
Project Execution:
Cost: support project cost tracking and optimization
Quality: support equipment design, selection and quality assurance
Schedule: support project schedule development, optimization and progress tracking
Safety: support project specific safety and environment plan development, and the goal to zero incidents
Compliance: detailed review of designs ensuring they meet all code, regulatory and compliance requirements and summarizing the documentation of such (under P.Eng. supervision)
Operations: attend project sites during both construction and operation
General:
Accountable to maintain internal, customer, partner and supplier relationships
Actively support all areas within TransAlta beyond the direct responsibilities with the Growth projects team as needed
Bring ideas and initiative, an open and willing learner who takes ownership and connects engineering with value generation
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
Minimum two to three years of study toward an engineering degree in mechanical, chemical, or, electrical engineering
Exceptional analytical skills using spreadsheets, advanced database use, and technical software; skills in Primavera and/or MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint and Word
Ability to improvise and deliver innovative solutions in the face of conflicting project requirements
Contract review and negotiation knowledge
Major equipment performance testing knowledge or experience
Knowledge of electrical system design (transmission, substation, collector systems, major electrical equipment, etc.) and protection/control/automation
Strong verbal and written communication skills are required for presentations, report writing, and proposal writing. This includes the ability to express technical concepts to laypersons
