Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

Position Overview:

General Fusion is searching for an Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Manager to lead the Company’s EH&S Program (Program) at its headquarters in the metro Vancouver area. Reporting to the Vice President, Fusion Island Engineering, the successful candidate will have experience in developing, operationalizing, and managing best-in-class Programs within a broad-based technology development environment. They will have experience with EH&S programs which reflect a combination of industrial safety standards and best practices for working in an environment that includes high energy electrical systems, high intensity lasers, high energy fluid/mechanical systems and alkaline metals.

General Fusion has a risk-informed foundation for its EH&S Program, building on the principles of Human Performance. The EH&S manager will maintain these guiding principles in refining and improving the Company’s Program, by working closely with the leadership team and communicating effectively across the entire organization – including engineering, technology development, executive leadership, human resource and administrative functions – to lead a collaborative, human performance focused safety culture built on trust, teamwork, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

The EH&S Manager’s scope of responsibility will include

Health and Safety Culture

  • Developing and maintaining the systems, processes, policies, and best practices necessary for maintaining a safe Company work environment and excellent safety culture in a technology development environment.
  • Collaborating with the technology development organization – including engineers, scientists and subject matter experts – to do hazard analyses and develop operational safety practices in General Fusion’s laboratories, including the safe operation and maintenance of General Fusion’s test beds and prototypes.
  • Acts as a change agent in support of continuous improvement

Health and Safety Program Management

  • Leading the Company’s Safety Committee and maintaining all necessary records and documentation associated with the Committee business.
  • Conducting and documenting risk assessments for test beds and prototypes across General Fusions technology development program.
  • Developing and managing an effective a root cause analysis program as part of an overall Corrective Action Program (CAP) for both actual safety incidents as well as near misses – including incident assessment, capturing and effectively communicating incident – learnings, and ensuring proper follow up of action plans together with management.
  • Tracking, documenting, communicating, and reporting the Company’s safety performance to stakeholders such as employees and the senior management team.
  • Ensuring effective and consistent implementation of the H&S program across our facilities in the metro Vancouver area

Health and Safety Compliance

  • Ensuring General Fusion work practices, facilities, equipment, and work environment comply with all applicable regulations, laws, codes, and standards.

Requirements:

Relevant Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • 10+ years of experience managing safety programs in a prototype or technology development environment.
  • Strong technical background with proven experience in developing safety policy using a risk-based approach.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Acts as change agent to drive cultural change and inspires others to action through collaboration and influence
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Focus on customer service building relations with functional and with key stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; service oriented.
  • Must have strong communication & presentations skills and ability to relate to all levels of the organization.

Preferred:

  • Experience with high energy fluid/mechanical systems safety practices and design
  • Experience with high intensity laser safety experience.
  • Experience with high energy pulsed power systems safety practices and design
  • Experience with liquid alkaline metal-based fluid systems safety practices and design
  • Experience with radiation protection programs and principles.

Education:

  • University Degree in Engineering or Industrial Safety
