Job title: Floor Fellow
Job description: Reporting to the Residence Life Manager for their hall, Floor Fellows serve a live near student leadership role integral to building a community of support and respect within residences. Floor Fellows assist with residents’ academic and social transition into university life and support the wellbeing of residents. Floor Fellows are the primary peer resource for the residents in their hall.
Community Building / Programming
Develop and maintain personal relationships with residents through planned social interactions:
Fulfill monthly passive and active programming expectations that support the social and educational needs of students that align with the student life cycle and the Residence Life Programming model
Conduct floor meetings
Attend and support events organized by Residence Life Staff, hall and inter residence councils
Encourage and support their students’ attendance at University workshops and seminars
Be visible, have a presence in the community, build community in building assigned to (e.g. dining hall, community spaces)
Peer Resource
Provide peer support and referrals for students facing personal, social or academic difficulties
Report all student of concern and disclosures of sexual violence to Residence Life management, Local Wellness Advisor and appropriate McGill office, such as OSVRSE
Conduct and document regular minimum 2 check-ins with residents per semester
Serve as an exemplary role model for residents. especially in their academic life, interpersonal relationships, community involvement and online activities
Know, communicate, enforce and abide by existing Residence Hall, SHHS and McGill policies (e.g. Code of Community Living, Residence Handbook, McGill Student Code of Conduct)
Facilitate roommate/community conflict mediation meetings with assistance from the RLM as required
Maintain confidentiality as per the confidentiality agreement
Collaborate with Front Desk, facilities, night stewards, dining hall and other SHHS and McGill staff to ensure high level of support and services to student
General Availability and Duty
Serve as an accessible resource to students in the assigned residence
Building safety/emergency response, work with night stewards, ARLM, RLM, this could include fire alarms, maintenance issues, contacting 911
Respond and assist in the event of an emergency situation
Perform duty shifts, according to the schedule and conditions determined by the Residence Life Manager of their hall. Duty shifts are scheduled late evening/early morning hours
Duty conditions include but are not limited to: remain in assigned building for the duration of the shift; hold and respond to the duty phone, complete active rounds (number of rounds outlined by RLM based on building needs) as directed to engage with residents and to uphold the standards of behaviors in the community, assist students in distress, enforce quiet hours when in effect, report and mitigate safety hazards as necessary, follow up on conduct issues in the building both on and off duty
Support residents who are sick, injured or in distress to direct them towards medical or professional services
Participate in move in and move out days, McGill Open House and other Residence activities
Training and development
Attend and actively participate in Floor Fellow Orientation in August and in-service training throughout the year
May participate as required in select working groups or committees
Administrative Tasks
Attend all team and individual meetings called by their Residence Life Manager
Complete regular written updates as required by Supervisor
Regularly check and return necessary communications with Residence Life staff through McGill email
Complete duty log and incident reports every shift
complete written updates and reports as requested by supervisor
Post and remove signs and notices as required
COVID Context
While the general roles and responsibilities of the Floor Fellow position remain the same, certain aspects may look different given the restrictions and realities of the COVID pandemic
In person duty shifts, which include physical rounds of the building are an integral part of the position, and will continue during the pandemic, with the appropriate safety measures in place:
PPE will be provided and is expected to be utilized during duty shifts
Due to the potential restrictions to in person gathering, as instructed by the provincial health authorities. a portion of the position may be in a virtual format, such a virtual training, meetings, student check ins and programming.
Qualifications
– Experience living in a student residence
– Good communications skills; such as active listening
– Ability to work part of a team
– Ability to manage time effectively; including multi-tasking
– You must have a satisfactory academic standing
– You must have full-time student status at McGill University
– You must be able to provide 2 references

-Demonstrated practical experience in customer service setting

Before commencing the role
- You must be legally entitled to work in Canada for the duration of the appointment and be able to meet the hourly requirements of the role each week.
- You must have a valid First Aid certificate (or an equivalent to the Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid) with CPR/AED Level C
Hourly Salary: (AMUSE Floor Fellows) $13.50
Hours per Week: 13 (Part time) Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
