Job description: Our client, Sagard Holdings (“Sagard“) is a multi-strategy alternative asset manager with professionals located in Canada (Montreal, Toronto), the United States, Europe, and Asia. Founded by Power Corporation of Canada (PCC) in 2005 to complement its global investment holdings, assets under management have expanded from $500M USD to over $15B USD, and Sagard’s team of diverse professionals has grown from 50 to close to 300 team members in just five years. Sagard invests across five asset classes: venture capital & growth (Portage Ventures, Portage Capital Solutions, Portage Web3), private equity (Sagard Private Equity Canada, Sagard MidCap, Sagard NewGen), private credit (Sagard Credit, Sagard Senior Lending), royalties (Sagard Healthcare) and real estate (EverWest).

Sagard is looking for a General Counsel & Corporate Secretary to join its executive team and support the company’s accelerated growth.

Reporting to the Managing Partner and President and working closely with Sagard’s senior leadership team, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of legal, compliance and the corporate secretariat as well as managing the legal and compliance team which is comprised of 11 full-time employees. You will be called upon to develop and deliver practical legal solutions and influence key business decisions by exposing legal risks. You will oversee all legal aspects of fundraising, including fund formation, structuring, and other capital raising processes. You will also support the company’s M&A objectives and coordinate transactions with external legal counsel, and act as corporate secretary and ensure compliance with corporate governance practices.

Are you passionate about investing, have an entrepreneurial mindset, good business judgment and enjoy being at the heart of decision-making? Are you someone who enjoys fast-paced environments and are known to be proactive, creative and solution-oriented?

We are looking for someone with at least 15 years of relevant investment fund and/or private equity experience, and, ideally, with past M&A experience. Candidates must be bilingual, licensed to practice in a Canadian province, and are expected to be based out of the Montreal office.
