Job description: Job Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Health Information, the Health Informatics Specialist integrates nursing science, computer science and information science to capture, analyze, and extract clinical information from various paper and electronic sources. The extracted information is then entered into the BCT registry to predict outcomes of care, performance indicators and clinical indicators. This clinical data provides BC Transplant with information for strategic planning, management decision making, clinical indicators and quality improvement activities.

Duties/Accountabilities:

  • Utilizes clinical knowledge, informatics knowledge, critical thinking and best practice to promote quality management through the application of informatics.
  • Extracts clinical information including transplant procedures, complications, infections, biopsies, co-morbidities, and laboratory results.
  • Collects patient information from various paper based and electronic systems at the three transplant referral hospitals (VGH, BCCH and SPH) and the seven regional transplant clinics.
  • Maintains accurate data entry and integrity of patient information in BC transplant registry by verifying and auditing the completeness of patient data entered.
  • Communicates and collaborates with a variety of front line physicians, nurses, program managers, coordinators and health information staff.
  • Participates in casual coverage and implementation support as required for project implementation and production systems and end-user support.

Qualifications:

A level of education training and experience equivalent to graduation from an approved school of nursing or Health Informatics with three (3) years’ experience and a working knowledge of health care data sources and relevant privacy legislation.
Ability to be self-directed the successful candidate will possess exceptional analytic capability and attention to detail, including the ability to manage multiple demands and pressures while producing high quality work. Problem solving, curiosity and self-motivation are essential. The Health Informatics Specialist will need to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with tact and diplomacy. Experience or working knowledge of quality improvement methodology, change management and clinical information systems is considered a plus.
