Genetic Services, AHS South, is a team of about 60 highly committed physicians, allied healthcare professionals, nurses and administrative staff who collaboratively provide genetic health care services for the population of Southern Alberta. Genetic Services are organized in a hub-and-spoke structure, with core facility located at the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH). This temporary 0.6 FTE Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) position provides essential support to Clinical, Metabolic, Adult and Prenatal Genetic Services, as well as the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System (ACASS). This position reports to the Unit Manager. Genetic services is a highly specialised service with unique workflows relating to medical record management and rare disease coding (ORDO, HPO, OMIM, and HGNC). This is an exceptionally busy, challenging and demanding position, with diverse roles and responsibilities including: Compiling, organising and prepping legacy paper charts for batch scanning into Connect Care; supporting record importing and data coding and abstracting into a third party clinical system (Phenotips); completing release of information requests with sensitivity to highly confidential genetic and family member information; preparing reports as required by Genetic Services staff as well as external system partners; preparing/completing internal point of touch scanning audits; reviewing/verifying/providing feedback to clinicians regarding referral and visit diagnosis coding (ICD10 / SNOMED CT); other duties relating to health information management as required. This is the sole HIMP position with Genetic Services. Although the team is highly collaborative and supportive, the incumbent is expected to learn, problem solve and complete their work fairly independently.

Description:

As a Health Information Management Professional I, you will be responsible for coding and abstracting data from clinical records, release of information and/or data quality assurance. In accordance with AHS procedures and the Health Information Act, you will gather, retrieve, collate, code, design, analyze, interpret clinical and demographic data and perform statistical reporting and regular data quality reviews for patient records.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program. Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA). Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience applying relevant healthcare privacy and confidentiality legislation (HIP, FOIP) as well as AHS’s Information Privacy and Information Security policies to facilitate access, use and disclosure of patient information. Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy and disease processes, especially as relevant to rare genetic diseases. Demonstrated aptitude in adapting and applying abstracting skills to rare disease coding, and familiarity with ORDO, HPO, OMIM, HGNC ontologies. Extensive experience using Microsoft office suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, Access). Prior experience working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, administrative staff and other professionals. Experience reviewing and analyzing datasets to identify and resolve potential issues, errors and gaps. Proven ability to perform highly accurate, detailed, organized work, including prioritizing workload and meeting established deadlines. Prior experience working in both a noisy, busy shared team environment as well as working independently. Must be able to sit and type on the computer and use a mouse for prolonged periods of time. Must be physically able to lift up to 50lbs. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. Preferred Qualifications:

Proven ability to participate productively in a team environment, including understanding own role and the roles of other professionals, and actively seeking, respecting, considering and being receptive to the diverse perspectives and opinions of collaborators.
