The Focus Week Workshop Course in sentence representation principles will first aim to introduce to the students the applicable principles and theories of sentencing. (This will be a brief overview since there is a sentencing course.) There will be a brief overview as well of the general theories, objectives, and principles of sentence. However, the focus will be to apply these principles in sentence representation.

The principles of aggravating factors and mitigating factors in sentencing will be critically analyzed. There will be a detailed look at the objectives of sentencing and how a sentence must be tailored to the offender. Several critical perspectives will be analyzed as we conduct an in-depth review of the R v G.G. QCCA 305 decision. Sentence representation with respect to racialized and indigenous offenders will also be addressed.

The OBJECTIVES of this focus week are to provide the students with a solid understanding of the principles of sentence representation. By the end of the week, the student should be able to appreciate and apply the notions as well as have developed a critical understanding of the personal nature of sentencing and the need to individualize and tailor a sentence to the accused. The students would have become familiar with notions such as moral culpability and the required proportionality tests in sentencing.
