The salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $64,970 – $73,124 starting salary determined by the PEA .
Performance range: starting salary to max of $85,269 is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Director, ICS, the Manager, Education Abroad is responsible for overseeing undergraduate and graduate student exchange programs, student mobility activities, partnership agreements, stakeholder relationships and engagement with Faculties and Academic units. The Manager, Education Abroad leads a team that support inbound and outbound exchange students and education abroad programs and initiatives on campus.
The Manager plays a key role in developing, maintaining, and building relationships with domestic and international mobility partners both on and off campus. This position implements agreements and liaises with senior officials from partner institutions as well as external stakeholder groups to facilitate the smooth operation of the ICS’ Exchange Program, and development of mobility programs and initiatives. The role liaises internally with UVic Faculties and Academic units, other departments and units including Co-op and career Services, Student Services, Office of the Registrar, and Campus Services. The Manager collaborates with units and departments across campus to build resources and develop programs to enhance the experience of all education abroad participants.
The Manager cultivates and maintains positive working relationships with administrative and academic colleagues across campus, at partner institutions, and with a variety of domestic and international organizations and service providers to ensure the safe, efficient and effective operation of education abroad programs. The Manager works in close partnership with the Director to develop a strategic approach to the development, implementation, and management of an assigned portfolio of programs, services, and communications in the area of education abroad, including exchanges, group study programs, summer schools and research opportunities, etc. The position identifies risk management considerations for programs and student participants and works with the Director, ICS, to manage critical incident cases involving inbound and outbound students participating in education abroad activities.
As a result of the nature of the duties and responsibilities of this position, occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
Job Requirements
The Manager, Education Abroad requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline, and five (5) years of experience in a higher education setting with specific experiences in international student mobility, partnerships, leadership and managing a unit and supervising multiple direct reports.
Experience should include:
- Strong leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to supervise and work with a diverse team of professional and administrative staff,
- Demonstrated proficiency building effective collaborations and connections across units/departments;
- Excellent project and program development, assessment and management;
- Excellent program and/or office budget development and financial management skills;
- Excellent understanding of best practices in international education abroad programming and a working knowledge of international development issues and protocols.
Equivalent combinations of education, training and/or experience may be considered. Preference may be given to applicants with experience or thorough knowledge of the University of Victoria’s academic programs, policies, and procedures.
In addition, this position requires:
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills (both oral and written), consensus-building, conflict management, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced knowledge of effective practices in international education, student mobility, and international partnerships an ability to adjust to multiple cultural, ethnic and linguistic environments.
- Ability to exercise a high level of diplomacy and intercultural competence.
- Ability to travel internationally.
- Superior organizational skills, and a proven ability to multi-task and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines.

- Personal experience studying, working, and living abroad an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct effective, in-depth research and to critically analyze results.
- Proficiency in a second language.
