Role Responsibilities

We are currently looking to hire one wage (0.4) meat inspector in the Airdrie region.

As a Meat Inspector, you will be responsible for providing slaughter inspection services at provincial abattoirs.

Duties while performing kill floor inspection services will include:

  • pre-operation inspection
  • ante and post-mortem examination of animals
  • completion of time reporting and;
  • relevant inspection documentation

This position is a regulatory role and involves the onsite enforcement of provincial statutes administered by the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS).

The Meat & Dairy Inspection Section (MDIS) is responsible for providing regulatory inspection service to approximately 115 licensed red meat and poultry abattoirs across Alberta.

Qualifications

Technologies 4 – Wage Meat Inspector

  • Two (2) year technical diploma in a related field, preferably in Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety/Food Science, and
  • Minimum of two (2) years of directly related meat inspection work experience (i.e. working as a meat inspector on kill floors).
  • Experience as a meat inspector within the Canadian federal or provincial systems preferred.

Equivalencies considered – directly related meat inspector experience considered on the basis of 1 year of meat inspector experience for 1 year of education.

Meat inspection experience may not be substituted with other education or experience.

Additional Assets to be successful in the role:

  • Knowledge of animal diseases and pathology
  • Requirements for humane livestock handling and stunning
  • Food safety principles for slaughter and meat processing
  • Familiarity with and ability to interpret regulatory standards (i.e. Meat Inspection Act (AB), Meat Inspection Regulation (AB), and Meat Facility Standards).
  • Experience using computer technology (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel) is a must.
  • Robust competencies in communication and conflict resolution (i.e. Verbal Judo) are an asset.

Candidates that do not meet Technologies 4 qualifications may be offered a Technologies 3 classification.

The successful candidate must successfully complete all in-house training. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team while demonstrating the Alberta Public Service values of respect, integrity, accountability, and excellence are essential for success in this position.

Competencies

Notes

Wage employees receive 11.2% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of benefits and vacation leave.

  • 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays
  • 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay

Terms of Employment

  • Four (4) days of work in a 10 day rotation are guaranteed. Days of work may change week to week.
  • Additional shifts may be required for training purposes and as operational needs require.
  • Work schedule runs Monday to Friday.
  • Wage positions are 6 month contracts.
  • You should be available to work for any weekday anytime from 5 am to 5 pm and on short notice.
  • Extended working hours (overtime) and/or travel will be required to complete assigned field work.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving abstract is required.
  • Ability to work under varying site conditions including, inclement weather conditions and wet surface areas/environments.
  • PPE will be provided.
