Job description: Position Overview

The Office of Postgraduate Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking for a Part-time Limited Term Medical Learner Support Specialist for approximately 12 months.

This position reports to the Manager, Office of Resident Affairs and Physician Wellness with accountabilities from the Director of the Office of Resident Affairs and Physician Wellbeing.

This position works to support the physical, emotional and psychological well-being of postgraduate medical education trainees. The Medical Learner Support Specialist provides services related to personal and family-related issues, career development and academic challenges. In some instances, there may be a need for crisis intervention.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provide educational support services for individual Physicians/Residents/Fellows
  • Facilitates the emotional, physical, and academic welfare of Residents and Physicians
  • Provides general intake and assessment for residents requesting learner support services
  • Demonstrate range, depth, and flexibility in responding professionally to resident/fellow needs for preventive and developmental support
  • Offers one-on-one meetings with residents/fellows to assist them in acquiring the skills necessary to negotiate the personal and professional challenges of residency
  • Develop and document intervention plan based on identified needs in accordance to professional standards
  • Recommend or refer to third party services as required
  • Access or know where to access other community services when needed (Resource navigation)
  • Facilitates crisis intervention when required
  • Respond to mental health emergencies and other crisis, as appropriate and upon request
  • Provide input to team related to factors, barriers and dynamics that influence physician and resident success
  • Collaborate with other professionals in planning and implementing services that align with best practice, and ethical and professional standards
  • Demonstrate specialized expertise in all areas of learner services and maintain confidentiality
  • Familiar with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) guidelines and requirements
  • Facilitates interactive, wellness themed workshops and activities
  • Proactively determines strategies to meet Physicians/Residents/Fellows’ needs and trends
  • Pursue educational opportunities that contribute to innovation in the area of learner support

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in a related field, Social Work, Psychology, or a related professional designation
  • A minimum of 3-5 years related experience
  • Suicide Intervention training including ASIST an asset
  • Experience in identifying trauma as a result of exposure to racism or discrimination is a key in this role
  • A demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Highly developed oral, written and presentation skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills written and verbal
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently
  • Understanding of the reporting requirements for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta an asset
