The Adult Acute Services units of the Edmonton Zone Addiction and Mental Health Programs located at the University of Alberta Hospital site are dynamic, patient and family-centered inpatient units where all members teamwork within the collaborative care (CoACT) framework according to the program’s Principles of Care. Reporting to the Relief Team Program Manager with the Staffing Service Center and under the direction of a Unit Manager or designate, the Psychiatric/Mental Health Aide performs activities that support meeting the personal care needs and comfort of patients in accordance with patient care plans, and hospital policies and procedures. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting in providing routine care to meet patient’s hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs. The Psychiatric/Mental Health Aide also assists in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, families, staff and visitors. Off-campus patient escort duties may be assigned. The successful candidate should also demonstrate strong verbal communication skills that support verbal messages being received and understood. Active listening skills. Congruent non-verbal communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain relationships built on mutual respect, appropriate sensitivity and transparency, empathy, and compassion with patients, families, colleagues, and professional and medical staff. Ability to manage emotions and strong feelings, maintain a calm and tactful composure under a broad range of challenging circumstances, think clearly and stay focused under pressure. Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others. Ability to enhance, support, empower and otherwise increase patient engagement in treatment and change. Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks.

Description:

As a Mental Health Aide, you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team to provide a welcoming and safe care environment. You will assist in the provision of direct patient/client care as delegated in a person-centered, recovery oriented and safe manner. In this position, you will assist and / or promote independence to patients/clients in completing activities of daily living as well as assisting other health professionals with providing treatments and observing and reporting relevant patient/client information to professional staff. You will assist new patients/clients and families with orientation, and assist in the general support of the work area.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12. Completion of Health Care Aide or Mental Health Aide Certificate or equivalent. Additional Required Qualifications:

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. English language proficiency. Preferred Qualifications:

Post-secondary education in social sciences, psychology or health services. Experience working with persons with addiction and/or mental health issues in a hospital setting.
