Position Description

The Mental Health Counsellor provides therapeutic counselling, group facilitation, client care, and advocacy for individuals and families with mental health needs. This work involves conducting psychosocial assessment, trauma therapy, evidence-based practice that uses culturally sensitive approaches and requires an understanding and capacity to work with the refugee and immigrant population in the Champlain region. Using theoretically-informed, and culturally responsive treatment interventions, the Mental Health Counsellor will support clients presenting with a wide variety of issues arising from their pre- and post- migration experiences. The Mental Health Counsellor will provide counselling/psychotherapy to help clients process loss, trauma, manage mental health concerns, and improve emotional well-being. Working on-site and in community, the Mental Health Counsellor will work collaboratively with our settlement program staff to deliver programs and services that support the successful settlement and integration of refugees and other new immigrants in Ottawa. This position requires strong communications and interpersonal skills, excellent organizational abilities and exceptional cultural competency.

Position Requirements

Education

  • Successful completion of a Master’s level clinical training program (e.g. Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, M.Ed.) of Social Work or equivalent
  • Professional license and member in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrics and Psychotherapists (OACCPP), Certified Counsellor Certification (CCC) with Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) or related membership/license/registration is an asset.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years counselling in a community based setting with emphasis on counselling, crisis intervention and mental health issues
  • Minimum 3 years experience working with marginalized and diverse client populations, specifically with refugees and immigrants

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of short- and-long term strength-based approaches to counselling in a community health setting
  • Knowledge and commitment to work within an evidence-based practice framework and reflective practice
  • Strong clinical knowledge and skills in at least one of the following: brief counselling, narrative therapy, solution-focused counselling/coaching, CBT, Mindfulness; other practice-based clinical interventions, and evidence-based trauma counselling
  • Clinical experience in crisis intervention, safety planning, and suicide and risk assessments
  • Experience working with families/couples and individuals in a brief counselling capacity
  • Ability to work with marginalized persons from a client-centred, empowering, and strengths-based approach
  • Able to collaborate with other professionals (i.e. settlement workers, health and allied health-care professionals).
  • Specific knowledge / experience working with new Canadians, immigrants who have experienced war-related trauma, grief, loss, mild to moderate mental health issues, addictions, community conflict and issues related to family life, violence, poverty and stress.
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience in individual and/or family therapy with diverse client populations
  • Sophisticated understanding of pre- and post- migration issues on therapeutic processes and alliance

Language Capability

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Fluency in French is highly desirable
  • Fluency in any other languages is an asset
