Job title: Non-Physician Expert, Sports Medicine Centre

Job description: Position Overview

The Sports Medicine Centre in the Faculty of Kinesiology invites applications for a Non-Physician Expert. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 9 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Non-Physician Expert (NPE) Clinical Lead. The successful candidate is required to complete an intensive 4-month curriculum training program for the Sport Medicine Specialty clinics including the Acute Knee Injury Clinic (AKIC), Acute Sport Concussion Clinic (ASCC), Acute Sport Injury Clinic (ASIC), the Shoulder Injury Clinic (SIC) to be considered a Non-Physician Expert (NPE). This training requires attendance at all training sessions, research rounds, and scheduled orthopaedic training clinics at the University of Calgary Sport Medicine Centre. Evaluation will be performed through multiple choice question and objective structured clinical examinations.

This position communicates on a daily basis with the supervising Sport Medicine Physicians and Clinic Manager. The position includes administrative, clinical and research responsibilities.

Administratively, upon completion of the training program and evaluation component, this position is responsible for assisting with the organization and operation of the Sport Medicine Specialty Clinics including the Acute Knee Injury Clinic (AKIC), Acute Sport Concussion Clinic (ASCC), Acute Sport Injury Clinic (ASIC), the Shoulder Injury Clinic (SIC), and any future specialty clinics. These clinics are scheduled as half-day clinics, on average 5 times per week. The organization of each clinic requires communication with the Sport Medicine Centre Clinic Manager and NPE Clinical Lead to acquire clinic space and schedule supervising physicians to run the clinics. The individual must have the organizational and administrative skills to coordinate the available space amongst the clinics of Sport Medicine Physicians and Orthopedic Surgeons and remain cognizant of the availability of X-ray facilities and administrative support. The NPE is also responsible for scheduling patients for new and follow-up visits. The NPE must ensure the sound operation of the online screening and diagnostic questionnaires that patients complete prior to their first clinical visit. The NPE is responsible for communicating any technical issues or problems with the web-based screening and diagnostic tool to the appropriate information technology (IT) support, as well as communicating resolution of these issues.

Clinical responsibilities, upon completion of the training program and evaluation component, include triaging patient self-referrals and primary care referrals from family physicians, emergency room or other medical facilities. The NPE must communicate directly with patients to instruct them on how to make appointments and manage the electronic medical record data of patients. The NPE is required to make sound judgments on the severity and urgency of each patient’s injury to appropriately screen and subsequently schedule them into the clinic. The NPE is responsible for ensuring appropriate diagnostic tests and reports are available to both the NPE and the supervising Sport Medicine Physician. Communication with diagnostic or medical facilities for reports and diagnostic tests may be required. At each clinical visit, the NPE is required to collate information on a patient’s history, physical examination, and results of diagnostic tests. The NPE provides a diagnosis and management plan for the patient’s injury, which is confirmed by the supervising physician. The NPE must possess the medical awareness of potentially urgent or emergent medical issues in patients. They must be able to communicate and effectively discuss these findings with the physicians and refer to consultants to facilitate urgent or emergent management. Additionally, due to the high volume of patients seen during clinics, the NPE must be able to work efficiently in a high-pressure work environment that requires integral medical decision-making for the care of patients.

The research responsibilities of the NPE include collaborating with the Medical Director and Alberta Bone and Joint Health Strategic Clinical Network to collect data required to measure the performance, effectiveness, and cost impact of the AKIC as a healthcare delivery model. Key data elements include patient wait times, costs, satisfaction and resource utilization (i.e. x-ray and MRI). Collection of this information will require administrative skill and awareness of policy and procedure with the collection of private medical information.

At all times the NPE will act ethically and be strictly adherent to medical privacy acts when collecting and communicating medical information.
This position works relatively independently and seeks guidance from the NPE Clinical Lead and other staff when appropriate. Ongoing coaching and training is informal, and feedback provided by the NPE Clinical Lead assists the individual in developing further clinical, research and personal skills. This individual also provides guidance and direction for clinic volunteers and medical students.

The NPE is required to actively participate in regularly scheduled peer-review sessions with the Specialty Clinic staff and Medical Director.
