The Kitchen Supervisor supports the Coordinator in ensuring the nutritional needs of the residents of the Ottawa Booth Centre are met through the ongoing smooth and efficient management of the food services department practicing and enforcing safe food handling standards. The Supervisor is solely responsible for the operations of the kitchen in the absence if the Coordinator.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Delivery

  • Provide overall supervision of weekend food services staff ensuring expectations and accountabilities are in line with the expectations of the Coordinator
  • Supports and leads ongoing training for existing weekend food services staff as well as training plans for new weekend food services staff
  • Ensures weekend staff operate in accordance with all safe food handling practices and legislative requirements
  • Supports the Coordinator in the recruitment and onboarding of new food services staff

Food Management and Delivery

  • Support in menu planning to ensure a variety of meals are nutritious, enjoyable, and in accordance with the Canadian Food Guide
  • May assist in the ordering of food items and other supplies from approved suppliers using the purchase order system
  • Assists in maintaining an adequate inventory of provisions for meals
  • May be required integrates food donations into the planning of menus, being prepared to adapt menus quickly in order to use perishable goods
  • Assists in ensures all food and food deliveries are stored to safe food handling guidelines and tracked in the inventory system
  • Ensures that the physical maintenance and cleanliness of the kitchen and dining areas in accordance with Health and Safety standards
  • Ensures directly and through cooks that all procedures, rules, and guidelines for food handling, storage and preparation are understood and followed
  • When necessary, ensure the kitchen supports time sensitive requests in the preparation of meals to be served during Salvation Army disaster responses

Reporting

  • Participates in food service evaluations and implementing any resulting approved changes
  • Ensures the accurate compiling of operation reports and statistics such as meal costs, meals served fridge/freezer temperature checks etc.
  • Ensures staff adhere to the staff meal plan procedure
  • Completion of weekend staffing reports for the review of the Coordinator

Health and Safety

  • Implements appropriate safety and security procedures as necessary
  • Ensures weekend food services staff are aware of and trained in emergency and safety procedures
  • Ensures, through employees, that all procedures, rules, and guidelines for the safety and security of residents and staff are strictly enforced and adhered to all health and safety policies and procedures in place; complies with all instructions from the employer concerning health and safety as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WSIB
  • Ensures work related injuries are reported as per Ottawa Booth Centre policy and safe WSIB standards

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The working location for this position is the kitchen at the Ottawa Booth Centre
  • The position requires a significant amount of walking and standing
  • The position requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted
  • May encounter upset or verbally abusive residents

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of a one-year Culinary Skills College Certificate
  • Current safe Food Handling Certificate
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in a supervisory role within a commercial kitchen environment
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in the food service industry

  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Ability to cook and prep food as per safe food handling guidelines
  • Effective coaching skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities

HOURS: 24 hours per week. Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8:30am – 5:00pm
