Job Summary

UVic Law is one of Canada’s leading law schools, known for the strength of our academic program, approach to experiential learning and our commitment to community engagement and social justice. As a member of the five person Student Services team, this position supports the Faculty of Law’s academic operations and commitment to student success and service excellence.

Responsibilities include: front line support to students, faculty, staff and the general public; in-class and learning related technological support and training to faculty, staff and students; coordination of student codename system; organization of assignment collection; exam administration; registration support; classroom administration, and room booking and coordination. In their support of classroom technology they incumbent will have the confident ability to learn, teach, analyze, troubleshoot and problem-solve issues with teaching technology, in particular audio-visual and videoconferencing equipment in a variety of situations.

Job Requirements

Skills:

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, with a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to relate well and work effectively within a team environment as well as the larger UVic community and external agencies.
  • Confident ability to learn, teach, analyze, troubleshoot and problem-solve the use of law school related technical equipment, in particular audio-visual and videoconferencing equipment, and to facilitate video conferencing.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional while problem solving A/V and V/C issues in high-stress situations, often in large classrooms in view of faculty, students and important guests.
  • Social and inter-societal acumen, with particular attention to Indigenous issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent service and maintain confidentially, with experience in dealing with students on sensitive matters in potentially volatile situations.
  • Ability to foster and contribute to a healthy and dynamic learning and working environment.

Specialized Knowledge/Education:

  • Knowledge of exam or similar software.
  • Knowledge, experience and high level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel (including mail merges), Outlook Calendar, listservs and Cascade.
  • Knowledge of web-based videoconferencing platform BlueJeans, and comfort with using other platforms such as Zoom and Adobe Connect.
  • Training or equivalent experience in dealing with conflict and defusing difficult situations considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of University of Victoria campus and policies, procedures and Calendar regulations is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Moviemaker or similar software an asset for video post-production.
  • Experience with technical writing and supporting in the use of software would be an asset.
  • Experience with CourseSpaces, Banner SSB/INB, FAST Student is strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • At least two years’ experience in providing direct customer service to a variety of stakeholders including students, faculty and the general public with the demonstrated ability to problem solve and handle each situation with tact and professionalism.
  • Experience with audio visual and video conferencing technology support, with a demonstrated working knowledge of common operating system based laptops and classroom technology used for delivery of audio and video.
  • Experience in providing high quality, front-line, and inter-societally conscientious student support.
  • Experience in effectively maintaining the confidentiality of highly personal and sensitive information.
  • Experience in providing dedicated administrative support within a team setting, in a professional environment.
