Job description: Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the manager of the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Services (SAFPC), the Registered Nurse will carry out professional duties as assigned including court ordered assessments of individuals facing charges under the Criminal Code of Canada. Nursing duties include effective communication among team and stakeholders, patient admission and discharge processes, completion of nursing histories in a timely manner, one to one interviews, history documentation, medication administration, attending weekly conferences, facilitation of patient groups, observing patients in all settings, documentation of patient’s presentations/behaviors and maintaining a safe and secure environment at all times. The registered Nurse will also carry out professional duties with the sites Not Criminally Responsible Due to Mental Disorder (NCR-MD) program and the interdisciplinary team. Will provide inpatient forensic mental health services to the NCR-MD patient population according to the professional standards of practice and the codes of conduct of Alberta Health Services and the College of Registered Nurses and Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta/ College and Association. Duties may include patient supervision in and out of the SAFPC building, attending/facilitating groups, promoting the enhancement of independence via the site specific recovery and rehabilitation model, preparing pre-board reports and participating in scheduled Alberta Review Board hearings.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:
Excellent written and verbal communication. Minimum of three years’ experience in a general mental health setting. Two years’ experience in an inpatient forensic setting. Basic knowledge of the Not Criminally Responsible due to Mental Disorder (NCR-MD) legislation. Solid interpersonal communication skills, organizational skills and critical thinking skills. Collaborative Problem Solving training. N95 training. Preferred Qualifications:
Basic knowledge of the Not Criminally Responsible due to Mental Disorder (NCR-MD) legislation. (Alberta Review Board). Minimum of two years experience working with the mental health population in a community setting.
