The University Health Network, where “above all else the needs of patients come first”, encompasses Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and the Michener Institute of Education. The breadth of research, the complexity of the cases treated, and the magnitude of its educational enterprise has made UHN a national and international resource for patient care, research and education. With a long tradition of ground breaking firsts and a purpose of “Transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery and learning”, the University Health Network (UHN), Canada’s largest research teaching hospital, brings together over 16,000 employees, more than 1,200 physicians, 8,000+ students, and many volunteers. UHN is a caring, creative place where amazing people are amazing the world.
The Thoracic Surgery unit on 10 Eaton South is a 28 bed unit, with 8 stepdown beds. The service distribution is 20 thoracic surgical beds, 6 respirology beds and 2 Endocrine research beds.
The thoracic surgery population is mainly comprised of patients that are admitted for surgery due to a diagnosis of lung cancer or esophageal cancer. Some non oncologic surgical procedures are performed for diagnosis such as gastro esophageal reflux disease, or hyperhydrosis.
The respirology patients are mostly patients with end stage lung disease such as primary pulmonary hypertension or pulmonary fibrosis. Many of these patients are also being assessed for lung transplant.
The endocrine research patients are admitted as they are participating in a research study that requires monitoring or documentation of responses overnight.
The nurses have advanced respiratory assessment skills and practice a variety of skills such as venipuncture, venous access, capillary blood glucose monitoring and monitoring of patients with patient controlled analgesia. All nurses who work in the step-down unit attend a 5 week high acuity nursing course where they learn such skills as arrhythmia interpretation, arterial line monitoring and advanced assessment.
