Job description: The Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR – http://www.cghr.org) is a non-profit and non-partisan organization at Unity Health Toronto and associated with the University of Toronto. CGHR’s mission is to lead high-quality public health research that advances global health, with particular attention to the world’s poorest populations. Recent emphasis has been on expanding COVID-19 research, focused on global mortality studies and national seroprevalence studies. Other research areas include maternal and child health, tobacco control, health policy and economics, and gender inequalities.
We are looking for a highly motivated Research Coordinator III level candidate with practical experience in managing and cleaning global health data. The successful candidate will provide data-related expertise and support for a team of multidisciplinary scientists and analysts. This is a full-time contract position for 1 year, renewable on satisfactory performance. The work will be partially onsite (with full COVID protections including vaccination if not already vaccinated) to begin and then adapt to full time onsite following hospital/government guidelines.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will act as a lead data specialist for a range of global health research projects involving COVID19/mortality data from Canada, India, and Africa. Data-related tasks will involve building pipelines for data cleaning, processing, and management. Primary responsibilities will include data validation, database schema design, integration of datasets into CGHR’s database, data documentation, and preparing datasets for statistical analysis. Additional responsibilities will include developing dashboards for data visualization, writing efficient programs/algorithms for standardized processes, and building a data quality framework. The successful candidate will also provide expertise for data-related requests and technical support to external collaborators. Demonstrated ability to be a self-motivated learner with a high-attention to detail, and creative problem-solving skills is essential to this position. The successful candidate will gain valuable experiences and skills in data management and visualization while contributing to a wide-range of projects in global health.
DUTIES:
- Data validation, cleaning, integration and other database tasks as noted above
- Design scalable database architectures
- Support detailed analytic tasks as assigned
- Support for the national antibody and global COVID mortality studies on databases
- Possibly (COVID allowing) travel to support country efforts in Africa and Asia
- Provide database and technical support for research teams/analytic teams
- Develop and design front end data visualization of health statistics
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, computer science, or related discipline
- Strong proficiency in SQL for database management and data migration
- Substantial experience in managing large scale datasets and earlier experience in health related database management
- Proficiency in R or Python for wrangling (cleaning, processing, transform) large datasets
- Experience working with GIS/spatial data, health survey data, and vital statistics
- Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and to adapt quickly to changing requirements
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills including supervision of staff
- Strong communication skills and ability to effectively present findings to a variety of audiences
- Familiarity with health information regulations, data governance, and data security is an asset
- Prior experience in global health research is an asset
