Job description: Position Overview
The Olympic Oval in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking two Recurring Part-time Senior Skate Shop Technicians.
The Olympic Oval is the premier Winter Olympic legacy facility from the 1988 Winter Olympic Games as part of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology. The facility provides programs and services for a number of local, national, and international stakeholders and is home to high performance athletes, world-class high performance programs, and excellent research. The Oval provides a dynamic environment for Faculty of Kinesiology programs including Dino Athletics, Active Living, and various Faculty courses and research initiatives. The Olympic Oval brings international recognition to the University of Calgary through the hosting of major international world class events, the training of Olympic athletes, and ongoing development of high performance programs.
Additionally, the Olympic Oval is recognized locally as a major part of the Calgary community, providing public skating, events and bookable spaces for various public user groups and entities.
This position involves working in a busy high traffic area with frequent interruptions. This part time AUPE position reports to the Manager, Business Development, Innovation and Technology in the Olympic Oval. Hours of work include daytime, evening and weekend. Occasional overtime may be required.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
These positions provide leadership, instruction and mentoring in technical expertise to Jr. Skate Shop Technicians and Skate Shop Attendants and must be an innovator in the technical services area. The Olympic Oval is a high performance and recreation sporting facility and therefore the Sr. Skate Shop Technician is responsible for providing world class technical skate services to long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and hockey. These positions provide advanced technical services to speed skating equipment such as rockering, bending, blade runner, hand-sharpening, skate repair, and comprehensive equipment assessment for Olympic Oval and University of Calgary users. This role will be an innovator and will serve as a mentor and will provide instruction on techniques used to maintain and repair high performance sporting and recreational equipment to Jr. Skate Shop Technicians and Skate Shop Attendants. These positions provide formal and informal training for athletes and customers on equipment and equipment maintenance.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Customer Service:
- Maintain strong lines of communication between Oval staff and user groups
- Will take a proactive leadership role and make recommendations to ensure world class service and efficiency
- Provide excellent customer service
- Ensure the quality of all products and services offered through the Skate Shop are of world class caliber
- Maintain a standard level of service according to Olympic Oval policy that is provided to all users to ensure a consistent service
- To show a continued willingness to improve technical knowledge and adapt to custom athlete requests
- Respond accurately and professionally to general telephone, and in person inquiries and requests
- Will also be required to act interchangeably with skate shop attendants
- Must be an innovator in the technical services area
Equipment/Skate Shop:
- Hand-sharpen speed skates for high performance athletes to exact standards based on micrometer readings and according to requested due date, and accurately fill out sharpening requests
- Sharpen recreational speed skating, hockey and/or figure skates
- Sharpen and maintain assigned rental skates during shifts
- Conduct workshops and seminars associated with equipment and maintenance
- CNC machine operation
- Comply with standard operating procedures and help to maintain a safe work environment
- Perform regular maintenance on sharpening machines and equipment
- Ensure all machinery is maintained and cleaned regularly
- Responsible for inventory management
- Provide comprehensive training and leadership to all Skate Shop and Skate Shop staff
- Instruct staff on maintenance and repair techniques for specialized sporting equipment
- Instruct staff on the use of specialized technical equipment
- Maintain accurate inventory, records and logs
- Keep the Skate Shop clean
- Complete the Sr. Skate Shop task list
POS:
- Operate the POS system for equipment rentals, merchandise and other monetary transactions
- Completing monetary transactions for customer skate sharpening using a cash register and/or Moneris pin pad
- Support Skate Shop attendants during busy hours or act as skate shop attendant if necessary
- You will be held accountable for balancing cash outs and providing proper reporting for your shift.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working on equipment and blades or equivalent of 3 years related technical experience
- Minimum Grade 12, a university degree or currently pursuing a degree in kinesiology would be an asset
- Previous experience in delivering excellent customer service
- Must have comprehensive in the use of specialized high performance skate sharpening equipment, and the impact to athlete performance related to skate maintenance
- Must have previous point of sale experience
- Experience as a high performance athlete is preferred First Aid certification is recommended
