Job description: The Senior Systems Specialist, reports to the Provincial Manager or designate and is responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of PHSA enterprise server infrastructure and related systems. The Senior Systems Specialist provides complex and varied functions in a shared service environment that requires a high level of specialized technical skills to fulfill responsibilities for the most efficient and effective use of the designated service. This includes all file, print, application, web, messaging and database systems, as well as core infrastructure applications and functions such as storage, anti-virus and Active Directory. The Senior Systems Specialist provides second and third level support related to hardware and operating systems. In addition to developing specialized solutions to meet the PHSA server infrastructure and communication requirements, the Senior Systems Specialist is responsible for the coordination, control, testing, maintenance and support of infrastructure systems to achieve the highest level of server and system and availability.
What you’ll do:
- Provide specialized technical troubleshooting and support in all aspects of server infrastructure and operating systems including file and print, web, database, messaging, anti-virus, storage environments. Implement solutions that promote the integration of technologies based on industry standards, and are compatible with the network environment.
- Coordinate and implement system upgrades and system tuning to ensure maximum performance, security and stability of servers, including capacity planning (such as storage, processor, memory, and bandwidth) for current and anticipated loads in response to policy, client requirements or technology related to server systems.
- Develop technical support procedures, for such areas as hardware/software installation and testing, and ensure system documentation is developed and maintained, including backup schedules and disaster recovery planning. Develop and communicate plans for planned downtime. Provide after hour support related to server hardware and applications.
- Provide technical consulting related to the acquisition of new systems and standards or the implementation of new applications on existing systems. Prepare technical whitepapers and develop business cases that assist decision making processes. Install, configure, test and maintain hardware and software in support of approved projects.
- Provide staff training and orientation, and develop supporting instructional material. Provide work direction to more junior staff and assigns tasks to designated staff within the team.
- Maintain an awareness of current information system trends and issues through literature review, contact with peers at other organizations and attendance at seminars, workshops and educational programs.
What you bring:
- A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science or related field, plus five (5) years recent related experience in an information systems technical environment.
- Proven hands-on experience with Microsoft’s infrastructure tools and technologies including all Windows Server operating systems (NT4/2000/2003/2008/2012/2016/2019).
- Expert knowledge and understanding of core Microsoft technologies and strategies, including technology design, implementation equipment and support functions related to MS SCCM management including packaging/reporting and remediation, SCOM, SMS, Powershell, SQL Server, IIS, Active Directory, DNS, VPNs and general networking.
- Strong enterprise-level experience in the systems administration and implementation in a large-scale environment, including clustering, load balancing and server recovery methods.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas in simple terminology. Ability to understand and clearly relate technical information and principals of operation to other members of the organization.
- Ability to analyze operational problems and recommend innovative solutions, demonstrating time management skills.
- Proven ability to plan and execute complex projects with stringent budgets and timelines.
- Certifications such as Microsoft MCSE or MCSA would be an asset.
