Position Purpose:

Reporting to the Manager, Centre for Language Learning, develops, monitors, and evaluates program curriculum and assessment practices and materials while supporting professors in the use of these in order to ensure the quality and standardization of teaching practices and assessments for courses offered by the Centre for Language Learning.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Evaluates strengths and weaknesses of current program curriculum and assessment practices to identify areas for innovation. Researches curriculum models and practices used by other institutions and/or encouraged by the most recent advances in research on Second Language Teaching and Learning. In consultation with the manager, instructors, and colleagues on campus, develops and implements curriculum innovations to ensure that curriculum and assessment updates are based on sound data and occur within a specific time frame.
  • Guides curriculum teams of instructors and/or work study students to develop curriculum materials incorporating elements such as course outlines, learning outcomes, suggested learning tasks, standard assessments, benchmarking procedures and tools, and textbook selection. Works with colleagues within OLBI and the University of Ottawa to promote the effectiveness and standardization of teaching practices.
  • Develops exams and coordinates their delivery for courses offered by the sector. Ensures that course sections coordinate on logistics and exam procedures to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of assessments within the Centre for Language Learning. Works closely with Language Testing Services and OLBI Teaching Staff to develop standardized assessments for both receptive and productive skills. Guides teaching staff on the use of these tools and reports problems to the Manager to ensure the reliability and validity of language assessment within the Centre for Language Learning.
  • Plans and conducts curriculum orientations for new teachers and workshops on curriculum updates for returning teachers. Offers individual teacher support in establishing best practices for the use of the curriculum while monitoring and utilizing program information platforms, such as Brightspace, designed to help teaching staff utilize the curriculum effectively.

What you will bring:

  • Master’s Degree in TESL, Applied Linguistics, or Education, with a focus on curriculum development and/or language assessment;
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in developing curriculum and standardized language assessments within a University setting;
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in teaching English or French for Academic Purposes to domestic and/or international students;
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems and to identify and recommend improvements to program services;
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, set priorities and organize schedules to meet firm deadlines;
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others;
  • Ability to take initiative and work proactively, independently and efficiently;
  • Ability to be flexible and take on additional duties as deemed necessary from time to time; and
  • Bilingualism (spoken and written).
