Job Summary
The Research Technician will be working in The Conservation Decisions Lab located within the Forest and Conservation Sciences Department, Faculty of Forestry, UBC. The tech will be undertaking a range of analytical tasks including mapping and spatial analysis using ArcPro/QGIS, analysis of remote sensed data including LiDAR. The tech will also be responsible for the organization and maintenance of field equipment, including servicing of field boats and vehicles, organizing and logistics of field program and undertaking and overseeing field work. The tech will assist in the preparation teaching materials for labs for CONS440 as required and participate in the production of scientific communications (journal papers, popular press articles). The tech must have an understanding of Salish Sea ecology and threat management in British Columbia and field work experience in remote locations. The position is based on Salt Spring Island with occasional travel to the UBC Point Grey campus for lab meetings, and other research related tasks such as vehicle servicing. This is a 4 day/week position.
Organizational Status
The Research Technician reports to Professor Tara Martin and is not responsible for any supervision.
Work Performed
Under direct supervision of the supervisor, provides technical support for the following:
Research Duties:
- Undertake spatial analyses and mapping of research study sites
- Undertake analysis of remote sensed data, including LiDAR
- Installation of camera traps and management camera trap data
- Undertake fieldwork in the Fraser River Estuary and Salish Sea
- Maintain and organize field research equipment including boats and vehicles.
- Assist with literature reviews, paper and report writing and publication process.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work is assessed on an ongoing basis by supervisor. Opportunities for training will be sought to enhance skills in all areas. Consequences of data mismanagement would be delays in producing scientific papers and reports that are expected by funding bodies and stakeholders.
Supervision Received
The research tech will be supervised by Professor Tara Martin.
Supervision Given
The research tech will not have a supervisory role but will work closely with graduate students in the Martin Conservation Decisions Lab.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergrad degree in geography/biological/forest sciences, preferred with some courses in ecology and conservation.
- Proficient in processing and mapping spatial data
- Experience undertaking fieldwork in remote locations
- Proficient using R and ArcPro/QGIS
- Experience in Salish Sea ecology
