SEM-Hatch is a joint venture between Hatch Ltd. and Sikumiut Environmental Management Ltd. providing engineering, construction and project management services in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. SEM-Hatch is performing Engineering and Project Management Services for the Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion project. Our client is now ready to initiate the construction phase of an underground mine. This mine expansion project is expected to produce about 40,000 tonnes of nickel per year and extend the life of the Voisey’s Bay operation until at least 2032.

We are interested in receiving resumes for Underground Construction Superintendent. This is a site project term position on a 2 week in 2 week out rotation, with 12 hour long shifts. The site is accessed via air out of St. John’s Newfoundland and other designated pick-up points in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate underground construction while remaining in compliance with safety
  • regulations, project schedule, drawing specifications, quality guidelines and budget.
  • Coordinate with site logistics personnel to ensure seamless delivery of contractor materials to work areas.
  • Assist with management of site Health and Safety Program.
  • Steward a safe working environment with contractors and comply with all environmental, health, and safety policies.
  • Proactively work with contractors to ensure project safety and quality objectives are achieved.
  • Submit daily progress reports to the General Superintendent outlining contractor progress, achievements, issues/concerns and other relevant information as required by management.
  • Other assigned duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-Secondary education in a mining related discipline or equivalent experience (preferred).
  • Basic Literacy (read, write, basic math and read blue prints) required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of underground mining experience.
  • Minimum 10 years in supervisory roles.
  • Exemplary knowledge of underground mining methods, blasting, ventilation and mine services.
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety regulations for Mines & Mining Plants, U/G mine rescue, WHMIS and Loss Control Principals.
  • Proficient computer literacy.
  • Working knowledge of all production equipment.
  • Ability to multi task and work effectively.
  • Proven track record in personal safety and housekeeping practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, problem solving, and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and motivate.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement and Lean Management principles.
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of an Integrated Team as well as independently.
  • Cultural awareness and understanding of work in the province of Newfoundland/Labrador.
  • Ontario Hard Rock Underground Common Core – Full Basic (or other provincial equivalent)
  • Ontario Basic Underground Hard Rock Front Line Supervisor (or other provincial equivalent)
