What we are looking for:
We are seeking a dynamic, innovative individual with strong leadership qualities and a focus on excellence. As a member of the Professional Practice & Education Program, the Simulation Education Specialist supports the corporate simulation education and clinical practice needs of all Oak Valley Health sites while contributing to a strong hospital-wide professional practice environment. In this role you will be responsible for leading the advancement of simulation activities and advancing the simulation strategy in education, research, quality improvement, process improvement, and scholarship at Oak Valley Health.
Key areas of responsibility include (but are not limited to):
- Support the strategic direction of the Academic Strategy, Simulation Strategy, and the Professional Practice Strategy
- Provide consultations, support and teaching in the design, delivery, and evaluation of simulation activities to groups, departments and programs as it relates to education and training of staff, physicians, and learners;.quality and patient safety; and corporate and strategic initiatives
- Collaborate with other team members to plan and design (including computer programming, manikin programming, resource allocation, trouble shooting) simulation scenarios to ensure the centre can run at maximal capacity
- Preparation of scenarios to ensure best practices are followed, including but not limited to: identifying and programing appropriate manikins, programming software, setting up simulation rooms, procuring/selecting appropriate equipment, creation of props/task trainers
- Ensure all Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accreditation standards and guidelines are followed
- Pre-brief and de-brief scenarios to support a safe learning environment for learners
- Participate in scenarios; this may include role-playing (nurse, MD, family member etc.), ensuring audio-visual (AV) equipment is cued appropriately, and delivering medical information to participants
- Cultivate Simulation/Industry specific expertise in existing and emerging technologies, innovations, and literature
- Participate in the production of scholarly work
- Follow best practices in simulation, including, but not limited to: supporting new Professional Practice Leaders and users across Oak Valley Health gain an understanding of the technical aspects of simulation; role model best practices in simulation pre-briefing and active simulation; teach a variety of classes and workshops on a topics such as moulage, fidelity, etc., based on the fundamentals of Adult Learning Theory
- Create a simulator’s guide customized to each scenario which provides the controller all the pertinent information, e.g. vital signs, opening stem, case progression, all images and FAST exams etc.
- Consulting and capacity building with junior Faculty and other Simulation Program users related to physical infrastructure, and training for proper use of simulation equipment
- Evaluating program and simulation specific outcome metrics
- Creating monthly metrics and reports to demonstrate the work of the program
What you bring to Oak Valley Health:
- Regulated Health Professional with current registration with the applicable College, in good standing.
- Master’s degree in a related field preferred
- Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles and instructing adults methodologies
- A minimum of 5 years recent clinical experience in an acute care hospital setting
- Current with simulation education, research, and practice
- Basic Life Support Instructor required or commitment to obtain within 3 months of hiring
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor an asset
- Familiarity with use and maintenance of simulation equipment
- Ability to independently sustain expert level of knowledge in the Simulation field, including proficiency in existing/emerging technologies
- Ability to learn new software and hardware quickly and independently
- Program planning, development, and evaluation experience is an asset
- Evidence of leadership in clinical practice
- Expertise in the delivery of formal and informal education/coaching
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Expertise in planning, leading and evaluating practice changes
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation, practice standards and best practice guidelines
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, collaboration and organizational skills
- Proven abilities in complex analysis, critical thinking and problem solving
- Computer proficiency
- Demonstrated good attendance and performance record with the ability to maintain this same standard
- Demonstrated commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, etc.) by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with hospital related policies, health and safety legislation and best practices and completing relevant mandatory education as required
Work schedule:
Standard work schedule is 0830-1630 hrs, Monday-Friday. Schedule is subject to change based on operational demands & flexibility to accommodate extended hours, evenings, and weekends is occasionally required in this leadership role.
Ability to travel between sites is a requirement of this position. Valid Ontario driver’s license required.
Compensation:
BAND H: $39.42-$55.45
