The Ministry of Municipal Affairs assists municipalities in providing well-managed, collaborative and accountable local government to Albertans. Our main responsibilities are:

Role

The Government of Alberta, Municipal Affairs, and Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) is currently looking for a Risk Reduction Education Specialist to join their busy team. If you are looking for a challenging yet exciting opportunity, look no further and apply now!

Reporting to the Manager, Strategic Partnerships and Public Education, the Risk Reduction Education Specialist plays a key role in creation of public education materials, communications and multimedia content to contribute to the unit goal of increasing individual and community resilience and contributing to disaster risk reduction behavior in Alberta. This position works closely with a number of internal partners including Communications and Public Engagement (CPE) staff, Public Service Commission (PSC) staff and other ministry partners to create innovative programming, tools and resources to increase risk literacy for GoA staff and the public and inspire preparedness action.

The Risk Reduction Education Specialist is a member of a highly collaborative team who work together on the development of the stakeholder engagement strategy, communications strategy, program development, public education and research initiatives. By working closely with the Personal Preparedness Program Consultant, Community Partnerships Officer and Research Analyst the unit builds public interest and engagement in disaster mitigation, prevention, preparedness, and resiliency.

The Risk Reduction Education Specialist works with team members in the creation and successful production of online events, e-learning content and facilitated engagement and learning sessions. This involves contributing to the creation of preparedness programming and public education materials built for a variety of stakeholders with varying needs and access to resources. Considerations must be made for both internal and external partners, such as associations, non-government/not-for-profit organizations, community/volunteer groups, schools and the private sector to contribute to program development and gain buy-in for the program, and create an engaged group of resilience builders in Alberta. Communication development involves the provision of accurate and timely information to stakeholders so they are empowered to take action towards being prepared for emergencies and disasters. This position also plays a key role in providing performance reporting and analytics for communications tactics, website traffic and social media content generated through personal preparedness program initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

University graduation in a related field (e.g. Education, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, and English), plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of the Emergency Management Act, the Government Emergency Management Regulation, the Alberta Emergency Plan, and the Provincial Operations Centre’s operating guidelines.
  • High-level oral and written communications skills. Position is required to develop verbal and written briefings, communications plans and presentations.
  • Experience leading projects or programs, preferably in a multi-stakeholder or decentralized operating environment.
  • Highly proficient writing skills for essentially error free writing where tone is mature, consistent, and suitable for topic and audience for various work related documents, and presentations including technical papers and plain English documentation.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills in Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Explorer.
  • Experience working with the media would be considered an asset.

Requires leveraging the skills and knowledge of subject matter experts internal and external to government and a close working relationship with both Public Service Commission and Communications and Communications and Public Engagement.
  • Develop Networks-Responsible for providing preparedness education, including creating new communication channels or leveraging existing ones. This requires strong stakeholder relations and communication skills with a varied group of partners, many of which will be new to the field of emergency management.
  • Creative Problem Solving – Works with internal and external stakeholders to understand the barriers to preparedness and develop education, communication and marketing strategies motivate community leaders to champion the Be Prepared program and for Albertans to take preparedness action.

Salary

$2,556.10- $3,355.81 (bi-weekly) $66,714.21- 87,586.64 (per year)
