Classification and Salary:

Maintenance Service Worker 1 (MSW1) – Park Maintenance Service Worker
$20.14 – $24.22 per hour
Maintenance Service Worker 3 (MSW3) – Park Maintenance Crew Lead
$24.68 – $30.16 per hour

For all roles:
In addition to regular wages, regular Wage employees receive 11.2% in lieu of benefits and vacation leave:

• 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays
• 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay

In addition to the regular wages and the additional pay in lieu of benefits and vacation, regular wage employees are entitled to shift premium pay:

• $3.25 per hour for weekends and holidays
• $2.75 per hour for evenings

Role Responsibilities

If you enjoy working outside and are committed to improving a visitor’s experience when visitors come to visit a provincial park, and want to help promote customer service in the parks by maintaining clean facilities and campgrounds, come join our Maintenance Team at any one of the listed Alberta Provincial Parks and Recreation Area locations within the Yellowhead Management Area:

We are looking for highly motivated, well-organized, responsible Park Maintenance Workers for the 2024 summer season. Individuals will be part of a team accountable for providing regular maintenance and operational duties that support the day-to-day operation of campgrounds, day use areas, facilities and trail systems.

• 1 Park Maintenance Crew Lead
• 5 Park Maintenance Workers

Hinton – William A. Switzer Provincial Park

• 1 Park Maintenance Crew Lead
• 5 Park Maintenance Workers

Grande Cache – Pierre Grey’s Lakes Provincial Park, Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area

• 1 Park Maintenance Crew Lead (oversees both areas)
• 2 Park Maintenance Workers (works in both areas)

Edson – Wolf Lake West Provincial Recreation Area, Minnow Lake Provincial Recreation Area

• 1 Park Maintenance Crew Lead (oversees both area)
• 1 Park Maintenance Worker (works in both areas)

As a Park Maintenance Worker (MSW1), duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Performing daily janitorial duties of park facilities such as washrooms, outhouses, picnic shelters, shower houses and any other assigned areas
• Daily garbage and recycling removal
• Performing landscaping and site servicing of campgrounds, day use areas and facilities
• Performing routine and preventative maintenance on infrastructure, vehicles and equipment
• Conducting water testing for small water systems
• Operating equipment such as mowers, trimmers, pressure washers, ATVs, UTVs
• Assisting with trail maintenance, beach and dock maintenance
• Installing and maintaining signage
• Reporting all maintenance concerns accordingly
• Assisting with hazard tree management and invasive plant management programs
• Being familiar with and practicing all pertinent occupational health & safety (OH&S) policies, procedures and protocols; and with the Facility Emergency Response Plan and protocols
• Completing administrative tasks such as timesheets, expense claims, commencement and termination paperwork, and online courses

Continued Role Responsibilities

As the Park Maintenance Crew Lead (MSW3), primary duties include assisting Park Maintenance Workers with the duties mentioned above in addition to administrative and supervisory tasks such as:

• Onsite lead for a crew of MSW staff; being accountable for direct site operations, and provides input for task scheduling for other staff
• Assisting with formal inspections, maintenance and servicing of equipment
• Completing trail maintenance projects
• Maintaining roads and parking lot areas
• Assisting with playground routine inspections and maintenance
• Installs and removes docks, maintains beaches
• Operating heavy equipment such as loaders, graders, skid steers, garbage trucks, etc.
• Operating chainsaws, brush saws and other higher risk equipment
• Assisting with water and wastewater system start-up/shut down
• Conducting water testing for small water systems
• Supporting the operation of various utility systems in accordance with standards and regulations to ensure safe provision of drinking water and wastewater removal/treatment
• Conductsing purchasing and orders supply inventory within budget
• Assisting with staff training and staff performance reviews
• Assisting with service contract management

All positions will require you to work various shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays. You have the opportunity to work up to 40 hours per week and will be paid for the number of hours worked. You must have good physical stamina to be able to perform manual duties outdoors and in any type of weather conditions, rain or shine.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Park Maintenance Worker( (Maintenance Service Worker 1)

• Some high school education or directly related experience based on one year of experience for one year of education

Park Maintenance Crew Lead (Maintenance Service Worker 3)

• Some high school education, related training, plus two years of related experience or directly related experience based on one year of experience for one year of education and some supervision experience

Additional Assets to be successful in any of the roles:

• Experience with hand and power tools; good working knowledge in the operation, maintenance and safety of small equipment
• Experience working in custodial, landscaping, or similar positions
• Chainsaw certification
• Exceptional communication skills and comfort level in dealing with difficult customer interactions or complaints
• Experience working within a campground setting
• Supervisory experience

Notes

Terms of Employment:

For the Park Maintenance Worker (MSW1) role: (up to 13 positions)

• Late April/May start date to September end date

For the Park Maintenance Crew Lead role (MSW3): (4 positions)

• April start date to September/October end date

For all positions:

• Access to reliable transportation to and from place of work
• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent will be required
• Final Candidates may be required to provide an acceptable 5 year Commercial Driver’s Abstract. (Will be reimbursed)
• Prior to hire, Recognized Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level “C”/AED Certificate will be needed for MSW3 Crew Lead positions
• Recognized Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level “C”/AED Certificate is an asset for MSW1 Maintenance Worker positions
• Adherence to Alberta Parks Uniform Policy; all personal protective equipment is provided. Certified Safety footwear is not provided, but candidates will be reimbursed for a portion of the cost
• These positions will require outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions
• Training sessions at the beginning of employment are mandatory (late April/early May).
• Staff housing may be available

Please note: A valid Air Brakes Certification is required to be successful for the Park Maintenance Crew Lead position in Carson Pegasus Provincial Park.
