We are looking for a part-time (12 hours/week) Physiotherapist to work at Brandt’s Creek Mews, our complex senior care community in Kelowna, BC.
Position Overview:
- As a member of the interdisciplinary program team, provides appropriate & effective physiotherapy clinical management for residents by assessing, treating, re-evaluating, documenting & teaching physical therapy techniques aimed at improving mobility, relieving pain & restoring functional capacity;
- Leads the falls prevention program by assessing residents with unstable gait & developing appropriate course of treatment. Assesses & fits residents for wheelchairs, braces, walkers, canes & prosthetic and/or orthotic devices to improve mobility & independence. Teaches residents, families & direct care workers in the application of prosthetic devices, hip protectors, TENS stockings & other aides;
- Participates in care conferences & utilizes diagnostic and prognostic muscle, nerve, joint & functional abilities tests to develop appropriate physical therapy treatment plans. Regularly reviews, reports & documents effectiveness of physical therapy treatments. Assesses new resident physical functioning & develops treatment protocols aimed at maintaining or restoring physical functioning;
- Treats residents to relieve pain, reduce contractures, develop and restore function & maintain maximum mobility using physical means;
- Develops & oversees resident walking programs & instructs direct care workers in implementation & evaluation of exercise programs aimed at maintaining or restoring independence through mobility;
- Participates in development of the continuous quality improvement program & identification of relevant performance indicators for physical therapies. Under direction of Recreation & Volunteer Manager conducts audits, compiles & analyzes data, prepares reports & makes recommendations for improvement;
- Instructs direct care & hospitality workers in safe lift & transfer techniques & body mechanics. Assesses technique & identifies needs for additional instruction & lifting equipment;
- Maintains physical therapy equipment in good working order. Cleans equipment & makes recommendations for equipment purchase to enhance delivery of best practice physical therapy; and
- Liaises with referring agencies & other service providers responsible for providing ongoing care to ensure continuity of treatment programs.
To Be Considered:
- Bachelors degree in Physiotherapy and two years experience working with seniors in a sub-acute or long-term care setting;
- Thorough knowledge of disease processes resulting from the aging process;
- Ability to oversee and monitor the delivery of physical therapies within a social model framework;
- Ability to work independently in the development of physical therapy treatment plans;
- Ability to effectively teach seniors, cognitively impaired adults, families and members of the interdisciplinary team
- Ability to assess functional ability and apply treatments that are appropriate to individual functional levels;
- Ability to work effectively with referral agencies; and
- Strong assessment and communication skills.
