The Art Therapist reports to the Program Manager/Director or delegate. The Art Therapist develops, implements, and evaluates the art therapy programs and provides art therapy services specific to the care area. The Art Therapist creates an environment where the patient’s physical, psycho-social, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual health are promoted and maintained. The Art Therapist participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and approved research, provides formal and informal consultations to other staff/community art therapists and provides leadership to art therapy students. The Art Therapist collaborates with the interdisciplinary team regarding operational issues and concerns.
What you’ll do
- Develop, implement and evaluate art therapy programs for patients; review patient records, interview patient and/or family, assess needs/goals, create an intervention plan, evaluate the effectiveness of the plan/intervention and document art therapy care.
- Receive referrals; gather information from referral source/patient/other relevant persons, evaluates/screens information, visit with patients to identify priority of service and recommend alternative treatment sources as required.
- Provide art therapy services; encourage and assist patients/families to express intense emotion and explore their thoughts in a non-verbal way, using a wide range of art materials to promote and maintain patients’ physical, psycho-social, cognitive, emotional and spiritual health.
- Facilitate one-on-one and group programs and/or workshops utilizing creative arts to assist patients with fostering self-expression, enhancing coping skills, managing stress, and strengthening a sense of self. Participate in developing art program material/curriculum, workshops, and individual mentoring in art to guide patients through the creative process and promote wellness, creativity and personal growth.
- Arrange group programs/workshops; schedule sessions times, book facilities, arrange for materials and audio visual equipment.
What you bring
- Graduation from an accredited Master’s program with a specialization in art therapy.
- Two (2) years recent, related experience providing art therapy services, coaching and group facilitation to populations relevant to the specific care area or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Eligibility for Registration with the British Columbia Art Therapy Association (BCATA).
You will have:
- Program development skills and the ability to identify gaps/needs and plan programs/develop services for the specific care area.
- Computer literacy including but not limited to electronic health record and Microsoft Office Suite.
You are able to:
- Facilitate workshops or groups.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with patients, families and team members.
- Draw out and honour information that will contribute to understanding the patient’s circumstance relevant to the specific area of care.
- Provide patient and family centered care.
- Work independently, as part of a self-organizing team, and in collaboration with interdisciplinary team relevant to the specific area of care.
- Operate related equipment.
- Plan, organize and prioritize.
- Establish and maintain rapport with patients.
- Analyze and resolve problems.
