New Media Gallery (NMG) is a contemporary public gallery, owned and operated by the City of New Westminster and located at Anvil Centre. NMG Lab is the education space managed by the NMG, offering the equipment, technologies and expertise necessary to deliver a rich array of public, school and professional programs, residencies and workshops. NMG Lab contains a Mac Lab, iPads, Camera Lenses, Lights, Green Screen, Projectors, Audio Interfaces, Speakers, Arduinos, Makes-Makey, modular technologies such as Pro Collection Little Bits, 3-D Printers & Scanners, Large Screen Monitor, VR suite, 360 Degree Camera and a growing list of other technologies.

We are looking for one or two dynamic instructors to join our faculty and develop unique public workshops which incorporate technology while teaching art fundamentals. You will work primarily with the NMG Program Coordinator and with the Director-Curators from time to time. You will begin by committing to developing and delivering a set of summer programs off-site. Your work will allow you to connect with Gallery exhibitions, work with other expert instructors, work out of the NMG Lab and at offsite City locations, and deliver the occasional outdoor field trip. All our Instructors have a contemporary arts and/or design background, with identifiable technical skills, experience and aptitude. Our initial focus for this hiring is on finding individuals with solid experience in Coding and basic level film- making for children’s programming. You have the ability to propose and develop original workshops and organize your time. Ideally you will have experience with the new BC school curriculum.

For 2022 summer camps, you will propose, develop and deliver high quality public Arts + Technology workshops and day camps for children that will focus on the Art of Coding and/or Film-making. Later, depending on ability and scheduling, you may propose programs for children, adults and professional artists. Specific duties include developing and submitting workshop proposals, demonstrating a variety of teaching methods, delivering imaginative art & technology workshops. You are experienced and flexible in your teaching approach, have experience teaching children and the ability to document and promote your programmes. Your focus is quality, creativity, imagination and professionalism.

If you have the following characteristics and qualifications, we want to hear from you:

  • You have completed a post-secondary degree, diploma or equivalent in the arts, design and/or arts education or you have a special knowledge of contemporary art practice.
  • You have previous teaching experience or you have taken art education courses.
  • Although all experience with technology is valuable we are specifically interested in applicants who have backgrounds in coding and film & video making.
  • You have knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives in contemporary art education and you are interested in developing new ways to encourage creativity and innovation.
  • You have experience with non-formal teaching methods and techniques.
  • You have excellent scheduling, and organizational skills with the ability to follow through on proposals and requests in a timely manner.
  • You have the ability to pass and maintain a satisfactory Police Information Check.

*Please note that hours of work are dependent on program registration. This project will require 20+ hours in June (flexible) and 70 hours (FT), July 11- 22, Mon-Fri. Two candidates may be hired, and must be able to commit to this summer schedule. Post summer, instructors will be able to choose their work hours, but we appreciate the ability to work weekdays and/or weekends and the occasional evening.
