Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for four (4) casual, seasonal positions of Civic Event Support Coordinator in Parks & Recreation. The Civic Events Support Coordinator will be required to assist with research, planning, and implementation of several HRM summer event programs. These could include: Summer Concert Series in both Halifax and Dartmouth, Canada Day, Natal Day, Bedford Days, Clam Harbour Beach Sandcastle Competition, Hopscotch, etc. The Coordinator will be also be required to work with volunteer event committees leading up to the event, as well as on event day. 50% of the responsibilities for this position are considered to be office work focused on administrative tasks required to plan an event, and the other 50% will be focused on event delivery. Civic Events Support Coordinator will be required to work weekends including holidays within the 35-hour work week throughout July and August.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • On-site event labour (stage management, COVID-19 mitigation tasks, etc.)
  • Assist in research, planning and implementation of HRM delivered civic summer events in the areas of programming, logistics and promotion
  • Liaison with a volunteer event committee
  • Administrative tasks
  • Other Culture & Events tasks

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary education bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Public Relations, Commerce/ Management, Event Management, Fine Arts or Tourism
  • Event coordination experience with preference of outdoor event experience
  • Experience with managing event/business pages via social media

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and react quickly to changing circumstances
  • Must be able to perform physical labor, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects, walk, stand, stoop and crouch for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions
  • Valid Class 5 NS driver’s license and drive vehicles including cargo vans

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Casual, seasonal

HOURS OF WORK: Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm, 35 hours/week. Weekend and holiday work is mandatory and will be set within the 35-hour work week once the event schedule for the summer is confirmed.

SALARY: Non-Union – $17.00 – $20.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay) for 18 weeks.

START DATE: May 1, 2024

WORK LOCATION: 1st Floor 40 Alderney Drive, and various event sites (Grand Parade, Dartmouth Ferry Terminal Park, Clam Harbour Beach etc.).
