Scope
The Museum of Surrey is a cultural facility with a mission to ignite young imaginations and connect Surrey’s diverse population and communities through participation, engagement, and storytelling. The museum tells the stories of Surrey’s rich history and culture. As such, we are looking for a Textiles Senior Leader who is outgoing, creative, and passionate about working with diverse communities.

We’re looking for someone with the heart of an educator, and who loves engaging with diverse cultural groups and communities. You thrive in interacting with members of the public and are enthusiastic about working with your hands. You can captivate your audience, clearly transmit knowledge, and leave lasting impressions. You will work closely with museum visitors, volunteers, and travelling artists. A strong understanding of cultural and intergenerational communication is a must to be successful in the role.

This position will support the public facing duties of the Untangling Textiles activation which is 14 weeks long (April 26, 2022, to July 31, 2022). Following this 14-week opportunity, other Senior Leader shifts for Textiles and Public Programs could be available. This position is reflective of Museum programming requirements and includes weekday shifts, specifically Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and some Thursdays.

Responsibilities

  • Engaging with visitors of all ages.
  • Teaching visitors about fibres and textile techniques.
  • Assisting visitors with hands-on activities.
  • Simple textile demonstrations, such as weaving.
  • Preparation of crafts and samples.
  • Assisting with volunteer supervision.
  • Performs other job related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 supplemented by 1 year of relevant experience in community service work or an equivalent acceptable combination of training and experience.
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • High Five Certification or an acceptable equivalent.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Experience working with children and seniors.
  • Heritage, arts, or cultural experience is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of a second language is an asset.
