COOK (CASUAL) EXTENDICARE SCARBOROUGH
Candidates are invited to apply for a Casual Cook in our 151-bed long-term care facility located in Scarborough, Ontario. Reports to the Dietary Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensures use of proper food handling techniques. Reviews regular and therapeutic menus and sets up equipment and supplies for food preparation. Prepares breakfast and lunch food following standardized recipes and production sheets. Provide prescribed diets, including variations in texture. Ensures meals are served on time, at appropriate temperatures and in portion controlled quantities.
- In the absence of the Dietary Manager and Cook I, decides on menu changes as necessary and ensures that changes are recorded following department procedures.
- Directs Dietary Aides in basic food preparation procedures and in serving activities at meal times. Able to arrange for replacement staff in the absence of the Dietary Manager.
- Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, fire, safety, environment and infection control.
- Maintains all required records such as menu changes, delivery receipts, temperature checks.
- Cooperates with other departments to meet resident needs.
- Monitors quality and quantity of food supplies ordered and proper operation of kitchen equipment and alerts Supervisor of problems. Recommends corrective action.
- Participates in facility meetings as assigned. Attends in-service education programs. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
- Ensures resident satisfaction and continuous quality improvement initiatives are promoted.
- Is knowledgeable of the Resident Bill of Rights/Governing Principles and endeavors to promote it.
- Completes daily temperature audits for fridge, freezers and storerooms and records all food temperatures on daily audit form.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read and write English and understand moderately complex verbal and written instructions in English.
- Chef training or culinary management diploma from a program that meets the standard established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities is required;
- Preference will be given to individuals who are certified with a Red Seal Certificate or completion of a chef training program from a recognized institution.
- Must have a Food Handler’s Certificate.
- Must have experience in large quantity food preparation, preferably in a health care or long-term care setting and knowledgeable of the Provincial Food Premises Regulation and Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
- Must be knowledgeable of special and therapeutic diets and textures.
- Must have knowledge of WHMIS.
- Must be physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items and stand for majority of shift.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Successful candidate must be available to work days, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
- Current (within 6 months) Vulnerable Position/Sector Screening (VPS).
